Assuming that this is the basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain two piece agitator model.

There is a Sears repair parts site:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number and a list of major sub-components will come up.

Sinceit isn't agitating (I assume not at all rather than just the top partof the agitator. If just the top part isn't turning then the easiestsolution is replacing the 4 "agitator dogs" ) the solution points to acouple of places.

1. The motor coupler may be broken.

This piece is a fail safe between the motor and transmission. and basically transmits power to the transmission.

This is a relatively easy fix for the basic Kenmore / Whirlpool washers.

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385250-replacing_motor_coupling_kenmore_top

Follow the instructions for removing the cabinet and pulling the pump, motor and motor mounting plate.

Thecoupler has two plastic pieces with three prongs each. In between isthe rubber coupler with six holes. If either of the plastic pieces orthe rubber coupler are damaged,

Pry the plastic pieces fromthe motor and transmission. Some people use a claw hammer but I'vefound that using a small (6 inch) pry bar works well.

Carefullyfit the plastic pieces over the motor and transmission shafts and pressthem in place (Use a 1/2" of larger socket to put pressure equallyaround the pieces.

Put the rubber piece on the transmission plastic piece.

Replace the motor mounting plate.

Carefullyline up the plastic prongs on the motor based plastic piece to thethree un-used holes in the rubber piece. If they don't line up right, the coupler could be damaged.

Mount the motor, don't forget the two screws, put the pump back on the motor and use its' clips.

Put the cabinet back on, don't forget to plug the lid switch back in and re-mount the consoleagitator doesn't turn, very loud - 2.gif.

My washer was doing the same thing. I had a magic marker on the bottom of the plastic tub below the inner tub. The agitation cam could not release for spin. I remove the magic marker and she took off.
This video shows how to get the inner tub out:

I have an kenmore elite top loader washer model 110 27087602. During the spin it makes loud clunking noise. I seen the other post about the agittor nut sometimes loose but I do not see this nut under the...

Hello,

The most probable thing that is making that noise is a broken motor coupler if it drains but the tub doesn't move or even if the agitator doesn't move (espically the lower section) on the wash cycle the coupler is the problem. I have included a youtube video that will show you step by step how to replace the coupler http://youtu.be/9K1KHEogf3c
If it does agitate let me know and ill tell you how to completly remove the agitator to check that drive block you refer to as nut under softner dispenser

Hope this helps and if it does please give me 4 thumbs up

Whirlpool top loading cloths washer agitator is loose when it should be turning. how do i tighten it?

Sounds like you might have bad agitator dogs. Remove the agitator cap, theres a 5/16th bolt that needs to be removed then the top of agitator comes off. The dogs are 4 little gears with teeth on them, when they get worn the top half of the agitator doesn't move.

Turned out to be a loose electrical connector near the motor.  Plug was re-connected and secured with a zip tie to prevent another disconnect.

I had the same clicking noise. Turned out to be the coupling between the motor and transmission. A $15 plus 1 hour labor fix
