Question about GE Profile PSW26P Stainless Steel Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

Same howling noise here

This isn't any help, but just to make you feel better, I also have a 4.5 yr old GE (not a Profile) that does the same thing. Fan makes howling sounds, and the speed varies fast/slow all day. I am currently waiting for a computer board which (hopefully) will repair the ice build up on the rear wall of the freezer (maybe it will also cure the fan racket).Good luck.

Ok nx , I will try to help you .
1 ) unplug the refrig , and on the back , remove the panel covering the
board.
2 ) unplug the blue conector on the board , with 3 larger wires connected to it . looking at the connector , you will see
wire1 , wire2 , space , wire3 .
3 ) find a short piece of insulated wire , and strip both ends about 1/2 inch , and insert one end into wire2 , and the other into wire3 . Leave the connector unplugged .
4 ) plug in the refrig . After about 1 min , look inside the freezer , at the bottom , looking for a red glow . If no red glow , then the problem is the heater or defrost thermostat ( the 1" cylinder , with a pink and blue wire going to it , clipped to the top right on the coils ) . If you replace the heater , replace the defrost thermostat also .
5 ) if you do get a red glow , then the # 4 thermistor is probably bad . This is the 1" white torpedo looking piece , with 2 wires going to it , clipped on the top left of the coils . This thermistor works off resistance by coldness , and sends the signal to the control board . When the control board registers this resistance for so long , it will go into the defrost cycle , causing the heater to come on .

The fan howling , could be from trying to pull air up thru the frosted coils. The # 5 thermistor , located at the bottom of the freezer , slightly foreward of the drain , inserted into a holder , with 2 white wires going to it , tells the control board what the freezer temp is . This thermistor , could be bad , varying the resistance message to the control board , causing the fan speed fluctuations .

Testimonial: "Thanks for your info. My repairman NEVER tested the defrost heaters or other parts, and simply ordered the comp. board - I'll see how this goes."

My GE Side by Side is about 4 years old and it has made a high pitched howling noise for a year or two. Everyone who comes to visit notices it. I can hear it in the bedroom at night. When I turn the fridge...

There is something going on with the fan in the refrigerator. It may be blocked by ice or it is blowing across a crack just right. Take some time to inspect the passageway between the freezer and the refrigerator, and you should find something out of place. If you can't find anything, turn the whole thing off and completely thaw it. When you turn it back on, it should be better.

How long is your warranty good? You might be able to get it repaired for free.

You need to replaced the door cam assembly on the bottom of the refrigerator side. It is probably cracked and hanging up.

Howling noise

I don't see anything located directly behind the icemaker on this model. Try to better isolate the location of noise if you can. If the icemaker is at fault, I wouldn't bother trying to repair. Order another one. One other thing to check is the water flow. When the noise happens again, stick your finger in the ice mold and feel for water. If it just filled, then problem may be in the water valve. Hope this helps,

My GE side by side refridgerator makes a "howling" sound. Any ideas?

the problem you are having is in the main control board. ge has had a problem with this part causing the fan motor to go into high and low speed which causes the howling noise. unfortunately it is a costly fix, around $125 for the part. if you are savy to changing this part it is a matter of unplgging about 5 connections and replugging them. the new board has an extra set of pin that nothing connects to. READ the instuctions and it is a simple fix, saving about $50-60 in labor costs.
