This could be caused by a shorted diode or bad transformer in the unit itself, diodes are generally inexpensive repairs and are fairly easy to perform. Transformers are quite a bit more expensive and can be more difficult to replace. The diode is the most common problem. To test the diode you can either use a ohm meter or a "AA" battery, short piece of wire or rolled up alluminum foil, scotch tape and a flashlight light bulb, to use the bulb technique simply dismantle the flashlight until you can easily access the 2 connectors of the bulb (one located at the bottom of the bulb and the other being the metal bulb casing) then take the twisted up alluminum foil and tape one end to one end of the battery ensuring the is a good connection, then tape the other end of the alluminum foil to the metal casing of the light bulb, after these steps have been performed, remove the diode from the microwave completely so all u have in your hands is the diode (they are usually connected with a flat terminal and a screw), if 2 identical flat terminals are used, be sure to make a small diagram of how the diode came out (if the white line on the diode is connected to the microwave transformer, be sure to install it the same way, improper installation can cause more damage!) now that you have the diode out simply touch one end of the diode to the battery and the other end to the untaped connector of the light bulb, if the light comes on, reverse the diode, if the light is still on when reversed the diode is short, if the light doesn't come on when reversed the diode is fine, current will only pass one way through a good diode and will pass through both directions if its bad, and in very rare cases the diode will not conduct in any direction. if the diode is fine I would have to suggest taking it into a service center or considder buying a new one as other parts can be in the $70-$160 range. hope this helps.

My microwave is only 2 1/2 yrs old and I bought it rom Sears

A loud noise could have been the high voltage diode going out. This may pop the breaker.

Microwave pops breaker on start

You probably have either a shorted high-voltage capacitor, or a shorted high-voltage transformer. And there is a 3rd possibility that should be checked first - the so-called "monitor switch" may be stuck in the closed position. There are usually 3 door switches in most microwave ovens, although some have 4. The monitor switch is usually the the one located in the middle of the door latch area.

We have a kenmore microwave oven & keeps tripping our breaker switch. Its not even a year old. What is the problem?

Your microwave should be on a 20 amp dedicated circuit. Often people add these later after initial construction and do not have an isolated circuit for it. If you have this on a circuit with other outlets or possibly the refrigerator, this can cause the circuit overload and trip your breaker. Try running an extension cord from another circuit that is not being used such as outlets, but not GFI outlets! and see if your microwave operates then. If not you have an internal issue with the microwave and it could be a defective Magnetron or doorswitch assy causing the problem.

Time for a new cover plate or a new microwave. Depending on the age of the unit, the part may not be available anymore.

The past Few days the microwave would trip the breaker. today I went to use it and it worked for 30 seconds when I checked what I was heating and turned it bakc on and it would not work

Microwaves that are either built in, a part of the oven, or over the range are on a dedicated circuit by law. This means nothing else could have tripped that breaker but the microwave.
If it has a problem severe enough to trip a 20 amp breaker several times, it is only getting worse each time you reset the breaker and turn it on.
There is a possible chance of fire. I recommend you turn the circuit breaker off and replace the microwave. Is it a plug in, or over the range type?

Unit not getting power

These machines seem prone to having a bad magnetron. Look for a circuit breaker near the power cord entry point. If tripped, reset and try to heat a cup of water. If it makes a loud buzz and then pops the breaker again, the consensus view is a bad magnetron. This is one repair that is recommended to send out. (~$150). You need to evaluate the probable cost vs a new machine.

Where can I get a HV transformer for Microwave?

I went on-line and found a site that gave answers to similar problems. I found that no power to the the control board usually meant a transformer issue. I checked the leads on the transformer (with a meeter) and found that it was shot. Now I need a replacement transformer, at a reasonable price, or else I will purchase a new Microwave.
