I've heard of other people refilling the cleaning cartridge with other solutions rather than buying a new one. I understand the genuine article contains a lubricant as well as a solvent. You might have to manually lubricate the cutter head if you use a solution that does not include lubricant.
From my understanding of chemistry, the cleaning cartridge label reads SD alcohol plus detergent. Translation: Slowly Denatured (80%+) Rubbing Alcohol plus mild detergent. I haven't had a problem yet. I see no rusted blades. Cytherian's advice is well taken; those cartridges are costly for what they offer.
Do NOT use any other fluids in the cleaning base other than what Braun supplies.
However, be advised that Braun encourages you to use this solution far more than is really necessary. I just tap out the whisker debris after each use, then use the cleaning solution once every couple of weeks. After cleaning, remove the cartridge and cap it off. You need to do this otherwise the cleaning solution evaporates. The result of doing this? I install a new cleaning cartridge about once a year, rather than once a month!
