This is quite common on older houses/buildings and on occasion newer ones aswell, when a house is built a decent carpenter keeps his building fairly level, usually within 1/16th of an inch, but there are times when this exceeds 1/16th of an inch, personally i'v seen houses being built where the whole foudation is off 1/2 inch or more end to end, and on older buildings as time goes by the foundation "settles" into the ground, depending what it was built on the whole building could settle further on one end of the house than the other, this can cause cracks to form in foundations. So if your tv is "level" (be sure to try another level) and your measurments are out, this usually means your house or building isn't level or the surface which you are measuring from isn't level. But be sure to try 2 or more levels to ensure the TV is in fact "level", hope this helps.

My Sony KDL-42EX440 will not turn on

Have you tried to do a "reset" ALL modern electronic items often get "locked up" and unplugging them from the wall will often get them going again. Unplug for at LEAST 30 seconds--then try again. If this does not help--the SMPS board may have failed on you. A good repair shop may be able to repair the board instead of replace it.

Can you give me some advice on, how to mount a 46in tv above my non working fireplace mantle?

You would have to use a mounting bracket specifically designed for the type of installation you describe and it certainly would have to be fastened into the studs behind the sheetrock. A TV of that size will be heavy to lift and install in the bracket

Some top brands in no particular order are, Panasonic, LG, Samsung, Sony, Sharp, Toshiba. Bear in mind that within any brand, there are budget models, mid-range and top range models. The LCD panels will range in quality based on their price range. Features will improve with price as well. One top feature is 120 hertz refresh rate leading to very smooth motion. You may not require such smoothness. Size is probably the most overlooked consideration. Take the screen diagonal measure and double it for the closest distance the screen should be from your viewing location. Three times the screen should be the maximum. For a 42" screen it might be 42" x 2 = 84" or 7' minimum and 42" x 3" = 126" or about 10' maximum. Measure your existing viewing distance, go to a Best Buy and stand at that distance to see how it might look in your home. Don't get hung up on precision if you are a few inches outside of these guidelines.

If your viewing area is brightly lit from outside light, favor LCD. If you will be in a dark room, plasma TV's are an option, but they will run hotter, draw more power and will be heavier requiring a substantial mount to wall mount them, not a one man job.
