Get a 'Live CD' off the internet, There are also images you can out on a USB drive. These are complete operating systems. It does not matter what one you get. They will boot up and everything will run fine if the hardware is OK. It will allow you to examine and copy your hard drive also. Just Google for live USB or get the Live USB Windows XP image at http://www.downarchive.com/software/operating/7468-windows-xp-live-usb-edition-2009.html. You can scan the drive for errors and copy off your documents. If the hard drive has errors you can use SpinRight to temporarly repair the errors, it works most of the time very well.

Fatal error on the hard drive
save anything you wish to keep....it will get worse.
At next startup insert system restore disc.
Continuously press F11, choose to boot from cd/dvd drive
follow prompts to reformat hard drive and reinstall operating system.
Remember to save anything you dont want to lose as this will wipe your hard drive

try starting it in safe mode, right after you turn it on you will se option like esc, f1 and f10 at the bottom of the screen, press the f8 key and a menu will display, use arrow keys to go down to safe mode option then press enter, do it quick, you only have 25 seconds to do it before computer starts normally, you wont see the f8 option but you have to press it, if it doesn't work, try keeping it pressed till menu shows...

The laptop loads up, lets me sign in, then goes blank, no icons

Try booting to the safe mode (F8 at boot) and see if you can log in via the safe mode. If you can't, try booting to your Windows CD, go to recovery console and run CHKDSK /R
If you still can't log in, try running diags see if the hard drive lists a failure.
if no hardware failure found, there and none of those solutions work, then re-installing windows will likely be the final resolution

Black screen w/blinking cursor

So.. you can select safe mode? Or you turn it on and it is resuming into the blank screen?

If the latter. Unplug the power, pull the battery out for 20 seconds or so. Then put it all back together and try booting up.

Try starting the computer in safe mode

Press F5 every few seconds when you startup the computer.

That should take you into windows. Once you're in, just restart the computer and you should be able to get back in.

Let me know what happens.

Turned on laptop says resume windows and screen goes blank and computer is unresponsive.

Try pressing F8 on startup, and chose to start in safe mode, if you can start the computerin safe mode, perform a system restore to an earlier date.

If the computer does not even start in safe mode, then you will need to reinstall the system, either from recovery CD, or from a generiuc windows Setup disk.

Are you able to start the computer in safe mode?
Try starting the computer into safe mode by following the instructions found here.
If the computer loads in safe mode, then you can try disabling some startup programs by reading the instructions found here and restarting your computer. If this fails to fix it, you'll probably need to reinstall windows.
