GE SidexSide PSS26SGPASS Makes Humming Noise

Hi, I see a lot of posts about GE s by s refrigerators making loud whirring or even howling sounds that are loud enough to wake people up at night. I am happy to say that I don't have the issue to that extent, but the noise I hear seems to come from the back of the freezer. It is a humming/whirring sound that just started on a 4 year old refrigerator. The volume of the sound is noticeable but not loud. It is just bad enough to be annoying while eating dinner or watching TV in the next room. It seems to stop temporarily when the doors are opened or if you give the unit a good shake. Any thoughts?

I called a local serviceman but he was at a loss. It's been howling for over a year. Driving me CRAZY. Just moved into a new condo. All GE Profile appliances but am very dissatisfied. Inside of dishwasher corroded within year one due to moisture build up.

Our refrigerator has the same problem. It started after about 18 months. It seems awfully soon for such a problem.

We found the reference to the controller board in the documentation. Is there an inexpensive source of these things?

Mine is a PFS22MIW (french door) about two weeks old. Noticed a slight whine when it was first plugged in, but last night it was so loud it woke my wife and I sleeping in an upstairs bedroom with the door closed, a howling noise in A above middle C. Howls as long as the unit is running. I just removed the ice bin and turned off the ice maker to see if that makes any difference. My SWAG is that the evaporator motor had bad bearings from day one and they got worse, as it sounds like a bearing vibration. Still cools but will probably make a warranty claim on this for a new motor. For sure it's a QC issue with supplier.

GE says it is not a problem, but rather it is normal refrigerator noise. It is loud enough at times to be heard in an adjacent room with a TV on.

GE refrigs have a variable speed evaporator fan motor that is controlled by a computer board on the back of the refrig. now the noise you are hearing is most likely the fan motor ramping up and down in speed (some of my customers say it sounds like a ghost). if its a continuous ramping up and down then the speed cotroller on the board is bad and must be replaced. if its just an occasional sound then thats normal and nothing to worry over.

Btw the reason the noise stops when the door opens is because the fan shuts off when you open the door.

My refrigerator/freezer making a howling sound and an intermittent whirring sound. I have noticed this at night, not sure if it is doing this during the day.

I have the same model, and the exact same problem. Additionally, the compressor/fan for the freezer cycles up and then down (rising and falling noise pitch) at a frequency of about every 5 seconds. The howling is worse at night(!?). It is 4 yrs old and was in the house we just bought. Help quickly, or this is a CraigsList item.

GE Model PSC23SGRC SS Serial #RH418861. Refrigerator make a howling noise Dave

I suggest a defrost with doors open over night, what often happens with this model is that you get an ice build up near the fan which causes an extremly loud noise, very common problem.

My fridge is howling pretty loudly when ever it runs , the howling is coming from behind the ice maker turned the ic e maker off but unit st ill howls what s wrong

Hi, It sounds like the evaporator fan motor is going bad or there is frost building up and hitting the fan blade.
Unplug the refrigerator and remove the rear panel inside the freezer and locate the fan.
You can plug the refrigerator in and see if the fan is making the noise.
I hope this helps you. Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Sounds like you have a broken motor coupler. They are inexpensive. Can be a little tough to replace but I can walk you through it. You can purchase a coupler here.

Howling sound from freezer fan section

it is most likely the fan bushings that are making the noise. you can try to lube them with a light oil if you want to buy some time. but the fan motor will need to be replaced soon.

Fridge makes loud moaning sound

It is the control board. There is a recall on certain models and serial #'s that will cover the parts, but not all are covered. do a google search for hotpoint or GE howling noise. you will find out all the info you need.

Howling - Which is the correct fix

I think I have the same problem. The unit is also about 2 years old (GSH25KGRBB). I have an extended warranty. They already replaced the controller card. I see it is the exact part number you have mentioned. It seemed to help for awhile but I think it has gotten worse again. The noise is more consistent after they changed the board. Less revving up to "turbo" mode. Howling is a good description. I can hear it now, on the other side of the house. I would change the fan out. I think they did the board first because it probably is easier even if the part cost is higher. I will probably call them back again. This will be the third time. The first time they just changed the little flapper on the ice dispenser. Otherwise the unit cools and runs flawlessly.
