I think the solution might be easier then that. It sounds to me like your running on a dead battery. Make sure that your power adapter is working correctly then look at the adapter port on the laptop. Quite often people will leave the power adapter attached to the laptop and stuff it in their bag. This bends the adapter inside the back of the laptop and detaches it from the board. the result is that even though the power adapter is attached, nothing charges.

I have a Gateway Solo Pro 9300 laptop. Whenever I shut it down, the power light turns orange, and the backlight is still lit. Other than that, the hard drive and fans turn off. What does this mean. How can...

That means the computer is in 'Sleep' mode. To completely shut down the laptop, you can press the power button once and it will do a normal shut down.
Good luck!

My laptop won't start... please

Not sure but it sounds like the hard drive is causing the problem. Lap tops are set up so that any problems with them they shut down, and a bad hard drive will shut you down the way you are describing. The only test i know for this is to remove the hard drive and see if you can get the computer to at least boot. If you can with no hard drive then it usually means the drive has failed. Not sure if this will help, but hope it helps.

Hp Pavilion dv9000 turns on and off

This is likely a hard drive problem. Replace the hard drive, reinstall the operating system and your problem will be fixed.

Dell OptiPlex GX620 starts up then shuts down repeatedly

Try this: remove the DMOS battery and unplug the on/off switch plug. It's the one in the corner near the power supply. To be sure follow the cable from the front on/off switch board on back to this plug. Then plug the A/C cord in, if the system boots up fine, then replace the front panel power on/off swith board. Naturally you will not be able to power off the computer using the power switch (since we unplugged it), so you will have to just pull the plug. Hope this helps. Joe

Acer quit working

Well, the 1st thing to check is boot into safe mode (F8 at boot) and see if you can get to the desktop.

If you can, run system restore and then see if you can boot to normal mode.

If it shuts down, boot to the system BIOS, and see if the system will continue to run, if it does, then your issue is most likely a operating system problem or a hard drive problem causing an OS problem.

If the system doesn't shut down in BIOS, next is try to boot to a CD. You may have to remove the Hard Drive to exclude it from the issue. If the system boots to a CD and will continue to run, then we are pretty sure the HDD/OS is the issue.

Next would be trying to run diagnostics on the hard drive, if they fail, replace the drive. If they pass, reinstall WIndows.
