Take a look at the back of the inverter for a copper coil, if youre-solder the solder points around the coil you may find it works againas components that suffer from extreme heat the solder joints drycausing bad connections, re-floating the solder solves the problem in90% of cases.

If you don't know how to remove the inverter from the bottom of the screen then please post back.

The plastic thin frame in front of the LCD screen, is the Display Bezel. (Toshiba = LCD Bezel)

Because of this; and the low cost, plus ease of replacing; most home users just opt to replace it.

Know this;
Fluorescent lamps have MERCURY inside. HIGHLY poisonous.
Now couple that with the long thin makeup of the CCFL, and how easy it is to break it.

This is why if the screen Inverter is found to NOT be the problem; I would suggest replacing the LCD screen itself; instead of trying to replace the CCFL, and cause possible Mercury poisoning.

Toshiba Satellite P105-S9722 white screen on stat up


Don't assume. Diagnose.

Problem could be graphics chipset, Video Cable, screen Inverter, or LCD screen.

Graphics chipset:

1) Laptop OFF, monitor OFF, connect a VGA monitor to the VGA port, on the laptop.
(Back of laptop - Blue)

Example of a VGA Cable, and a VGA connector, (Port on laptop),

If you have a CRT type of monitor (Looks like a small TV), you can use it, or a flat LCD screen monitor with a VGA cable.

The Toshiba Satellite P105-S9722 Notebook PC, also has a DVI connector on the back of the laptop. (Next to the blue VGA port)
You can connect a flat LCD screen monitor with a DVI cable.

2) Turn the monitor on. If a CRT type allow it to warm up.
Turn the laptop on.
By factory default the display should be on the external monitor.

If not;
Press, and hold down on the Fn key, (Bottom left), and tap once on the F5 key.
The F5 key is the Display Toggle-Over key.

You will see a list. It 'hot cycles' through the list, until you come to the external monitor device you are using.

External monitor display shows no white screen?
Your graphics chipset is good.
Go on with the diagnoses.

Problem is with the Video Cable, or in the Display Assembly.
(Screen Inverter or LCD screen)

Video Cable:
The Video Cable attaches to the motherboard under the Switch Cover, and about at the F2 and F3 keys.
It then routes under the left Hinge, and up into the Display Assembly.

Due to normal opening, and closing of the laptop, the Video Cable may become pinched, and pulled on.
This can lead to a simple loose connection of the Video Cable TO the motherboard, or TO the back of the LCD screen.

(The screen Inverter connection should also be checked)

Visual inspection will NOT do. You need to physically see if you can plug the motherboard connection, and LCD screen connection in.
It could be just loose enough you won't be able to see it, but will affect the display.

Sheath of Video Cable needs to be visually inspected for signs of damage. Signs of damage to the sheath, may also mean damage to the tiny wires inside the sheath of the Video Cable.
(Stretched/Broken)

Assurance that the Video Cable is not the problem, means checking out, or have checked out, with a multimeter set to OHM's, to run a continuity check of all the wires.
('Mom and Pop' computer store. See if they will check it)

Or simply replace the Video Cable. (After you fire up the laptop, and see if loose connections was, or was not the problem)

Thin Film Transistor (TFT) Active Matrix LCD screen, that is WXGA, and uses one CCFL for a Backlight.

It is a small circuit board, and is usually mounted towards the bottom of the LCD screen, and behind the Display Bezel.

A CCFL, (Or two of them), uses a screen Inverter.
LED backlighting however, may or may not use a screen Inverter.

Using LED's for backlighting is relatively new, when discussing backlighting technology.
Some of the first designs of LED backlighting does use a screen Inverter.
Newer designs do not seem to.

Since you diagnosed by using an external VGA monitor, you now know the fault lies in either the Video Cable, or the Display Assembly.

Your graphics chipset is good.
(Also known as GPU. Graphics Processing Unit )


A) Video Cable:
(Toshiba = LCD FL Cable )

See if the connections are good. Check the motherboard side connection of the Video Cable, AND the LCD screen side connection.

A loose connection can do this.

Observe the sheath of the Video Cable for obvious signs of damage.
If the cable looks pinched, stretched, or torn, the tiny wires inside the cable may be damaged also.

Best method is to remove the Video Cable, and perform a continuity test of the wires inside the cable, with a multimeter.
(An economical unit can be purchased for around $8 to $12.
Analog or digital is fine )

B) Display Assembly:

Video Cable checks out OK;

1) Check the connections to the screen Inverter board.
Make sure they are tight. Make sure the Inverter board does not appear to be damaged.

The Backlight bulb is taped to one side of the LCD screen layers, and is under that side of the Screen Frame.

The LCD screen layers MUST be kept aligned, as they were from the factory. For this reason alone, it is tedious for an experienced technician, and is usually not done at the consumer, or DIY level.

Screen on laptop is distorted halfway


A) Video Cable connections are loose:
Connection at the motherboard, and the connection at the back of the LCD screen, in the Display Assembly.

Both need to be checked.

[For Toshiba the Video Cable is termed LVDS Cable.

Low-Voltage Differential Signaling Cable. I will just keep referring to it as the Video Cable ]

B) Video Cable is damaged:
Observe the sheath at the motherboard side of the Video Cable?
Is there obvious signs of damage to the sheath of the cable?

If so, there may also be damage to the tiny, thin wires inside the sheath, of the Video Cable.

Due to the routing of the Video Cable under the left Hinge, the Video Cable may be pulled on. This can create a bad connection.

Due to the above also, the Video Cable's sheath may be damaged, and the wires inside.

If the Video Cable checks out to be OK, the next item is the screen Inverter.
To test a screen Inverter you need a sensitive multimeter. This usually means expensive. { Or use a known to be good, compatible screen Inverter } Just thought I would state that. Don't want you to completely disassemble your laptop, just to fix a Video Cable, or screen Inverter. {Or LCD screen)

Most consumers decide to just replace the screen Inverter because;
1) If the problem isn't the screen Inverter, it is the LCD screen.
(A LOT of people buy an LCD screen, when all they really needed was a screen Inverter)

An EXPENSIVE part.
(LCD screen? $150 to $400 approximately. Screen Inverter? Usually around $22 to $48 )

2) The ease of access to replace.

As stated, if the problem isn't the screen Inverter, then it is the LCD screen.


1) With ALL power removed, AC adapter (Charger), and Battery, remove the Keyboard Bezel, and the Keyboard.

This is the motherboard connection side.

Display Assembly removed with Video Cable.
Now remove the Display Bezel, and LCD screen assembly, to access the Video Cable connection to the back of the LCD screen.


{NOTE*
The screen Inverter is mounted at the bottom of the LCD screen, and behind the Display Bezel }

Toshiba satellite monitor is scrambled, how to fix?


Check to see if the problem is the screen Inverter, or the graphics chipset, or the LCD screen.
Use an external monitor as a test.

If the screen of the external monitor shows a scrambled display you have a problem with the graphics chipset.

If the screen of the external monitor does Not show a scrambled display, you have a problem with the screen Inverter, or the LCD screen.

90 PERCENT of the time the fault is the screen Inverter.


External Monitor;
1) You can use a CRT monitor, (Looks like a small TV), as a VGA monitor,
Or
2) You can use a flat LCD screen monitor that has a VGA cable.

A) Laptop OFF, and monitor OFF, attach the VGA cable from the External monitor, to the VGA port on the Toshiba Satellite A205 series Notebook PC.

C) The display is supposed to automatically show up on the external monitor.

Display good on external monitor? Problem lies with the screen Inverter, or the LCD screen.

Toshiba satellite a300 laptop display problem screen black, no display at all.


You laptop either needs a new Cable from the Motherboard to the Screen, a new power inverter, or a new screen. Most commonly, I have seen the video cable get smashed between the hinges/plastic case, and this causes the wires to break apart, leading to a black screen.

If the display comes back, slightly, when you lift the display lid up and down, this would be a sign that your cable is bad. If you get no reaction from opening and closing the lid, you may have a bad inverter or screen. It is most commonly the inverter or the cable.

If you have a spare monitor, you could plug it into the VGA connector on your Laptop as a temporary solution. If after plugging the monitor in, you get no display, try pressing Fn + F5.

The monitor on my Toshiba P25-S5093 does not have any display of any kind; all black. I have display using external monitor.


Hi,
Does the display show anything before you enter windows? If yes, then press the key to transfer video back to your original screen once you enter windows. It should be the function key "Fn" + F5 - F8. looks for the icon which shows a monitor or says "CRT/LCD".
If it doesn't show anything before you enter windows I'm afraid your screen needs to be replaced. Good luck.

My screen fails to illuminate, I can make out text just barely but there's no light - I think it's the inverter? If so I found one to buy but I'm looking to at least see it in my laptop first, is it...


  • Hi, hope this will help you with your problem. There are steps to 'change' the visual effects of the "Display." 1. Right click on "Desktop,” click Personalize, click, Display Settings. 2. Identify, Monitor used? 3. Down (arrow) select Monitors graphics. 4. Adjust, (low>high) resolution. 5. Select, Colors (16 bit>32bit), etc. 6. Select, Advanced Settings, click Properties ("check device status"). 7. Update Drivers (only if, necessary?) 8. Click on "List All Modes" select valid (modes) for the monitor. Note: Always click on the 'Apply', and 'OK' buttons after application changes for the process to take effect. 9. "Restart "Computer." *Next go, to: Screen Saver, in the Screen Saver Settings change 'Power' settings. *Next go, to: Start Menu, click on Product Name: (Toshiba), click 'Utilities' click, Toshiba Assist, click 'Optimize' click, "Display"; change power on display. *Next go, to Control Panel, in Mobile PC, click; "Adjust commonly used mobility settings" (changes the following); Display brightness, and Connect Display. “Did this solution help?”
