Toshiba satellite notebook dvd/cd player

The cd/dvds are not playing. I believe they are spinning but the window in which I can use the controls such as play etc does not allow me to play. However, the 'eject' button is lit and when I select it, the player opens.

The only thing that I can think of that might have made this happen is a 'copied' disc of MS office. When I tried to install software from that disc, the machine crashed. Since then, the cd/dvd player has not worked.

I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I suspect it is a software problem...?

    Dear Wolfleo

Thank you so much for your suggestion. I shall follow up. If it is a software problem, have you any idea what it might be and how I might get it fixed? I know this may be an impossible question to answer because you don't know what the actual problem is but the reason I ask is that my notebook is only a few weeks old and I don't think I could have put anything on it that could have wrecked it...apart from that copied cd...

    Thanks again!

    Hi Wolfleo

I wish I was brave enough to try doing what you suggest myself but I think it needs an expert!

I actually took my machine to the store where I bought it and they contacted Toshiba who were very happy to fix/replace anything (they haven't seen the machine themselves so they don't know what the actual problem is).

However it would mean that I would not have the machine back until after the New Year and as I need it for work, I decided to hold onto it until after NY.

In the meantime, I just thought I might look for some help online in case it was something easy to fix...Well, you've given me the help but I am too scared to do this myself :-)

I really do appreciate it though! Thanks again.

    Hi all!

It's me - Lucy of helplucy. I just 'fixed' the problem myself. I found the following link helpful.

To tell the truth, I can't remember exactly what I did but I followed the instructions from the link above and now I have these showing under my CD/DVD drives (in Device Manager)

I hope this is useful for the gurus and anyone who's had a similar problem!

Hi, this issue is known deivce problem from Microsoft eventhough you are using Windows Xp or Vista the CDW/DVDROM is not detected and does not appear in My computer icon. This can be easily fixed by a registry tweaks.

The error code means "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (code 39)"

Please click on this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929461/en-us and then delete the upper/lowerfilters which is blocking the CDW/DVDROM to appear on your windows. Please do not delete the upper/lowerfilters.bak files juts leave it on the registry.

Hope this helps!!!

Thanks

Try to get an Windows XP or Vista CD.

Boot the computer with the cd on drive.

Be sure to select to boot from CD in setup(F2 key I think) or boot menu (F9 key I think)

If the computer boot from CD, probably you have a software problem, else your drive is damaged.

Good luck.

    Lucy,

I never saw a CD Rom drive didnt work because a software problem, but you can try to remove the drive from device manager and let windows configure it again, but I think , the CD drive has a problem.

By the way, if the drive boot from a CD you can try to use Toshiba recovery Disc (ATTENTION !!! When restoring the factory software. ALL YOUR DATA IS DELETED).

Good luck friend. And let me know if you need anything else.

Try to upgrade the driver for the DVD player. This is done in the Device Manager.
Upgrade or reinstall the software used to play the DVD.
One of the best players for DVD and all sorts of other media is the VLC player - a free download.

Toshiba satellite A205 DVD player partially Inop

The disk drive could be going bad, or the lens may be dirty.

Try getting a dvd lens cleaning kit if you don't already have one, and run that. Make sure to read all the instructions that come with the cleaning kit.

The "FN" key does not function on my Dell inspiron B130

You need to install the keyboard utility for the FN key to work. I could not find your model# on the Toshiba site though so double check that. Playing DVDs requires a separate program such as Cyberlink. Disney DVDs should play though if the DVD is working - they have a built in player.

My dvd drive in my computer won't play dvds

1. Completely remove any dvd/cd player/burner softwares (i.e. Nero, Power DVD, etc.).
2. Go to device manager and remove your DVD/CD device from the device list
3. Restart you laptop
4. Windows will then try to reinstall the device drivers again for the DVD drive.
5. After another restart, then reinstall your dvd softwares again.
