Re: Flashing Light

I have had a HP Photosmart 945 for a few years now. A few days ago was the first time I saw my camera experience the problem described above. I thought something is wrong with the on-bard logic.

Replacing my batteries (4x2300mAh NiMH AAs) with four other freshly charged batteries of the same kind didn't fix it. The camera's LCD kept flashing on and off for almost an hour until my family got tired of it and turned it off by removing the batteries.

I just replaced the rechargeable batteries with four regular alkaline batteries and now suddenly it works. Go figure.

The moral is that changing the batteries sometimes helps. When it works, it will get your camera going for a while. The problem, however, doesn't seem to be battery-related or I would have seen it a long time ago with smaller-capacity batteries like alkaline AAs. Something is very wrong with the camera itself, that much is clear.

Best-case scenario now is that I have an unreliable camera that can give out at any moment. For example today it died in mid-shot and almost spoiled a family event. For me the solution was "get a non-HP camera".

I hope this helps someone out there.

I had the same thing happen to me with my pentax optio. You may have to large of an SD memory card. Or you could have the wrong type of card. I would recomemd that you use a 512mb SD card. Not the SDHC card. Also i would make sure that the battaries are fully charged. Hope this helps you out!

HP 945 lens stuck out, red light on steady, white screen

Ok, here's a couple of long shots to try...
If there is a backup battery remove that also and let it sit for some time with the power switch in the on position (if it has one)
also check the battery contacts are clean. Refit both batteries and try again.

Beyond that unfortunately it sounds like a main board failure. If you have any warranty on the camera return it, if not its likely the cost of replacement would be fairly high but worth checking with HP.
If your handy and fancy a go at it yourself it may be worth opening it to check nothing has become dislodged, but this is unlikely. else pick up a faulty one off ebay, one with a broken LCD or lens and have a bash at swapping the main board out yourself.

Before opening a digital camera its recommended you let it sit for some time (like a week) with no batteries in. There ia a large capacitor (like a battery) which can be charged up to 300v if you touch the contacts or anything connected to it it really is like a shock from the mains.. I have been bitten many times...
This can damage the delicate parts within because of high voltages but more often because you almost always drop the darn thing..
Best of luck

Hp photosmart 945 does not turn on all the way

I think the camera is not reading the battery life correctly....not sure. It indicated I still had well over half the life left. I changed the batteries and all seems to be okay at this time.

Flashing lights

I read your posting about changing the batteries. I tried it once and it did not work. Then, I tried it again a few weeks later and the new batteries made it work. I have not tried the rechargable batteries again. I am afraid to remove the batteries I placed in the camera. I hope this helps you. I think there must be a sensor that gets reset at some point and the issue stops. Who knows. Good luck!!!

HP also suggested to reset the camera as follows:
To Reset The Camera:
1. Remove the memory card and turn on the camera.
2. Open the battery compartment and remove the batteries.
3. Wait at least ten seconds.
4. Reinsert the batteries and turn on the camera.

I also found information regarding a similar problem with another model at this link:

Focus Assist Light and LCD Flash Simultaneously

The Issue:
When the HP Photosmart digital camera is placed on the dock without batteries, the AF assistance LED and LCD could blink at the same time. Explanation It seems that the super-capacitor on the camera senses the voltage supplied by either the AC adapter or batteries when they are inserted. This is more an annoyance rather than an actual failure on the device. The microcontroller (Dang) senses the voltage and sends a signal to the LCD and AF assistant LED. This is what some times is called a WAD (working as designed). If batteries are present or the super-capacitor is charged, the AC adapter will not trigger this behavior. This can be tried by inserting some batteries on the camera for 3 or 5 minutes, then remove them and place the camera on the dock. No blinking should be present.
