I have a firelight smart disk 40GB Model FWFL-40-N. I have an I have a Mac Mini. Both are about 5 years old. When I plug the device in it doesn't show up on my desk top. Thanks for any help/advice

The Mac searches for peripheral devices on startup.
Try plugging in the drive and turning it on and THEN starting the Mac.
If the Mac does not acknowledge or see the device, then
check your cable that connects the device. Use a known good cable
to connect it. Then repeat the above procedure.

Can't delete all the "hidden" files on the

if you do not need the files on the drive then you an do a hard reformat on it by brining it up under the disk manager in windows delete the partition then create a new partiotion this sould give you access to all the space on the drive, if not then have it run a disk check for damaged sectors.

Hard drive replacement

There is several ways for upgrading your external HDD's you just need a srewdriver and a lot of experience with reassembeling. Find bigger HD replacment for that one and with it in package you should also get manual instructions on how to fit it inside your SmartDisk Ext hdd case.

External hard drive doesn't respond

Shut your computer down. Disconnect you external hardrive. Power up your computer again. Power up the Verbatim and then connect to a USB port. You should hear a very quiet 'ping'.

Go to My Computer, and the Verbatim should be showing as one of your drives (probably Drive D). You should be able to open it from there.

Make sure that you have a Desk Top Icon for opening the hardrive, it makes it so much easier. Hope this helps

Harddrive is not recognised by my Mac OSX (10.4.8)

When you reboot and hold down the option key, does the drive show up during that initial process? Is the weird noise more like clicking or more like a high-pitched whirring? If the drive has been damaged on a hardware level (causes too numerous to list... age, power fluctuations, being knocked over or dropped, corrosion, poor workmanship...) and won't show up at all, it is probably now a paperweight. There are a couple of utilities available to troubleshoot disc problems for Macs. The most popular are Disk Warrior and Tech Tool Pro. They can often "see" a disc that Disc Utilities misses, and assist you in copying the data from the drive. This process is important to be cautious with, however, since your drive is making noises it should no longer be considered reliable and the best hope is to retrieve your data and then get a new one or have yours replaced [if it is under warranty].

SmartDisk FireFly 20 GB crashed The disk won't read.

What to do depends on what was stored on the drive. If you need to recover data bad enough I would recommend shipping the drive to a professional data recovery service. Doing anything dramatically decreases the chances of recovering all of your data. If its worth a try but not much money there are several programs you can buy (not Symantec) that may be able to recover your data but there is no guarantee. Let us know which way you want to go and we?ll pick up there.
