Question about Nintendo Pokemon Red
The battery usually has to be soldered in.
That should usually be done by a professional, though.
The most I can tell you is that (to my knowledge), it is perfectly legal to download a Gameboy Emulator (I suggest Visualboy Advance) and a "Pokémon Red (U)" ROM.
This is because the original games are all malfunctioning now and are hard to come by working copies, and no alternative has yet been offered by Nintendo, thus making a digital backup legally acceptable.
I suspect however that Pokémon Red will soon be available on Nintendo DSi Handheld Arcade.
Once that time comes, you'll have to shell out for a DSi and some Nintendo Points.
I can't be held responsible for any legal dispute resulting from downloading a ROM image.
