Assuming that this is the basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain two piece agitator model.

There is a Sears repair parts site:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number and a list of major sub-components will come up.

Since it isn't agitating (I assume not at all rather than just the top part of the agitator. If just the top part isn't turning then the easiest solution is replacing the 4 "agitator dogs" ) the solution points to a couple of places.

1. The motor coupler may be broken.

This piece is a fail safe between the motor and transmission. and basically transmits power to the transmission.

This is a relatively easy fix for the basic Kenmore / Whirlpool washers.

http://www.fixya.com/support/r699497-replacing_gearcase

Follow the instructions for removing the cabinet and pulling the pump, motor and motor mounting plate.

The coupler has two plastic pieces with three prongs each. In between is the rubber coupler with six holes. If either of the plastic pieces or the rubber coupler are damaged,

Pry the plastic pieces from the motor and transmission. Some people use a claw hammer but I've found that using a small (6 inch) pry bar works well.

Carefully fit the plastic pieces over the motor and transmission shafts and press them in place (Use a 1/2" of larger socket to put pressure equally around the pieces.

Put the rubber piece on the transmission plastic piece.

Replace the motor mounting plate.

Carefully line up the plastic prongs on the motor based plastic piece to the three un-used holes in the rubber piece. If they don't line up right, the coupler could be damaged.

Mount the motor, don't forget the two screws, put the pump back on the motor and use its' clips.

Put the cabinet back on, don't forget to plug the lid switch back in and re-mount the console.

I am not sure my machine is agitating correctly. This is my first load and all it does is swish back and forth. Is this normal agitation.

Nicki-you must have a front load machine or an older model that you can lift the lid on. Or this may be a new machine to you-unfamilar with-a make and model number would be helpful-the last new washer we got said on the lid-your new machine will not make the same noises as your old agitator-cheers Denny

WASHER DOES NOT SWISH DURING WASH CYCLE AND DOES NOT SPIN. IT APPEARS THAT THE ONE BELT IS IN GOOD CONDITION, NOTICED A HOOK BELOW THE BELT THAT HAS NOTHING ATTACHED TO IT BUT I PULLED IT AND IT SEEMED...

It is possible that the BELT IDLER PULLEY WHICH HAS A TENSION SPRING CONNECTED TO THE CHASSIS HAS COME OFF.
So please check if the belt is tight around the agitator pulley and the motor. If not there is spring which could have jumped and so the belt which is free over the motor does not rotate the tub.
So look for a hook or spring on the sides and pull it to give tension to the belt.

Agitator loose does not swish clothes around .... can't figure out how to remove the agitator in order to see what may have come loosened or if splines are stripped .... how do you remove the agitator ?

Hello, on the style GE washer there is an agitator coupling under the agitator that will sometimes strip out. To repair this remove the agitator by pulling it straight up and out.
TIP: If you can't get your fingers under the agitator, you can slip a belt under the agitator and then pull by that, once the agitator is off you should see a yellow coupling held on by a 7/16 bolt, remove that bolt and pull the coupling up and off the transmission shaft. Sometimes it will be hard to remove and you might need to knock it up with a hammer. Once it is off you should be able to slide the new one back on, bolt it down and push the agitator back on.
Thanks

I need to fix the agitator on my washing machine as i it not swirling the washing during the cycle

The agitator dogs are worn and needs replacement if the motor runs and the bottom part of the agitator agitates but the top part of the agitator does not. The motor coupler or drive belt is broken if the washer fills and the motor runs but no agitation at all. The lid switch is faulty if the motor does not run at all. Please let us know which among the cases stated above the washer is in and indicate the make and exact model number for specific and accurate troubleshooting and repair advice and for the exact replacement part numbers.

Agitator ''dogs'' not gripping, agitator spins freely; tub rocks

Likely a broken dog itself was making the noise. They should all be replaced.

Agitator on my washing machine is not rotating the way it should. It seems something is not catching and the piece is only rotating part of the time.....please help. ps How do I remove the agitator to see...

Remove the cap off the top of the agitator. Then remove the 7/16 bolt below. Your problem is inside the top part of the agitator. YOu need to buy an agitator dog kit. When the part is removed you will see how to put it in.

Just spins during the wash cycle

Sounds like the agitator got dislogged during moving. In some machines the design allows for the agitator to move up and down alittle too much. Try this and this is only a guess. With the machine empty push down firmly on the agitator and move it back and forth as you do. You might hear a little "pop". If it does, try running the machine again. If it works problem solved, if not tell what happened.
