I figured it out with absolutely no help from the manual. To initiate recording, you have to press the timer/set button. After the DVD recorder finishes recording, you have to re-press the timer/set button to take it out of recording mode. I think their book needs to explain that more clearly.

disc will not eject - onscreen message states "Disc not formatted per regulations, format, yes or no." After selecting format yes, message appears asking the mode, VR or video, and video was selected. Rotating disc symbol comes on, disc rotates forever, before returning to the same onscreen message regarding formatting. Open/Close Eject function does not eject disc.
