When I turn my Toshiba D-VR4 recorder on, it won't go to DVD

When I turn my Toshiba D-VR4 recorder on, it immediately goes to VCR mode and won't let me flip onto the DVD side. It won't even register "setup"

I figured it out with absolutely no help from the manual. To initiate recording, you have to press the timer/set button. After the DVD recorder finishes recording, you have to re-press the timer/set button to take it out of recording mode. I think their book needs to explain that more clearly.
