If your CD is SATA then the early SATA cables fail frequently .. usually intermittantly .. if reseating helps then replace the cable .. if its PATA (wide cable, older systems) . check the cable to make sure it its still plugged in correctly at both ends .. your CD drive could have failed .. a new one is not expensive and usually easy to replace ... or better yet you can replace it with a DVD drive (allows playing DVDs) or even a burner .. locally DVD burners are only about $24 .. of course they do CDs as well .. CD drives cost even less ..
