Power OFF computer and swap the memory modules with each other.
If you have two modules, swap them. If you have one module, remove and re-seat it.
If you have more than one module, they may be different.
Boot with only one module, test and then the other modules, one at a time.

I had the same issue... i put the original 512mb chip in with on gig, and it goes reconize 1.5 gig now... not a perfect solution to 2 gig, but better than 950mb.
