Clean the fan unit out with compressed air from the under side..

does the fan operate at full speed when you first turn on the notebook???

you should hear it at first boot.... full speed

do not hear it.. then your fan is out...

you can get a fan booster that clips on to the back of the computer and attaches to the usb port for power

get back with me if these solutions do need work

Over heating is not a battery related issue
but a cpu related one

what happens in a computer is that the cpu is attached to a heat sink that takes heat from the cpu
and a fan is attached to the heat sink that blows the heat away
now between the cpu and the heat sink there is a special paste called thermal paste/grease which allows the heat sink to take the heat from the cpu

after a period of time ranging from 6 months to 3 years this thermal paste gets consumed because of the heat

so now you have to reapply that paste

many companies offer a wide range to thermal pastes, some of them are coolermaster, sunbeamtech, arctic-cooling

the other possible reason could be that the hot air blown from the air is not able to come out and is getting trapped because of dirt stuck in the filter of the area the fan is placed.
but most probably its the thermal paste problem

Make sure your Notebook is not overheat if it is then you have to make sure the fan is working and have to work on the NB by placing it on a hard surface and also BIOS update will also help to resolve the issue.

if in case the notebook is not overheating boot to BIOS screen and check if the Notebook turns off by itself in bios if it does then its a hardware issue and you need to contact manufacturer to service the notebook

My HP dv6700 sometimes turns on and off by itself

What you're describing sounds like a hardware problem, not a software one, if the resetting occurs long before Windows loads.

As it's a notebook, my first suggestion would be to
make sure there's nothing wrong with the power point you're running it from, or the power cable. If you plug a desklamp into the same circuit (old-style incandescent globe, not fluoro) does it flicker? Is the power cable firmly plugged in? Has it been chewed by a pet?

Next run it without the battery and see if it still plays up. If it does still misbehave, you have a problem in the power adaptor or the internal circuitry of the notebook. If it works without the battery, the battery is on the way out and should be replaced.

My DV9000 shuts off by itself, randomly.. I know the motherboard gets hot so I'm not sure if it's the heat or I need to replace something..I've had my laptop for a few years now..Has anyone experienced...

I have distanced myself from HP computer products; too many problems in recent years. You may have an extended warranty; check through these to see if you can expect to get help from HP:

It switches off itself

Take out the battery and only try the ac adaptor. If the system still turns on then off then take out the hard drive and dvd-drive. If it still turns on then off then your motherboard is bad and would need to be replaced.
