Try to replace the compressor relay (most of the times problem) ,but if still doing the same clicking noise , the problem is in the compressor.

To determine which component has failed please do the following.

Unplug the freezer wait 5 minutes and plug back in. Listen closely for any sounds by the compressor. If you hear a click or hum followed by a click the problem is the compressor and would cost about $400.00 to repair.

If you do not hear any sounds the problem is most likely the cold control or sometimes called the thermostat. The part number is WR09X10053 and is about $25.00

My haier 5.0 chest freezer model # hcm050eb has quit cooling. When I checked the compressor I hear it come on for about 3-5 seconds and then it shuts off for a minute before repeating this. I've unplugged...

your freezer is short cycling which is bad for the compressor. Usually there is an internal overload in the compressor that automatically resets as the compressor cools. Check to see that all of the coils are clean and the small fan is blowing. this will make sure that the airflow correct. look for signs of oil around the compressor, the coils, and any connecting tubing. if you find oil, this is a sign of refrigerant leaks. the refrigerant is what cools the compressor and it wont run long in an overheated condition. it will finally fail in the open position and not come back on.(compressor overload switch) If this is the case you may replace it cheaper

Freezer wont run

LIsten for a "clicking" noise that hums and then clicks. If you hear this the compressor is trying to start and it is what is called cycling on the relay. There is a relay and an overload device connected to the side of the compressor that starts it. The problem may be the relay/overload, or it may be the compressor. The noise will occur then repeat a short time(minutes) later. If you don't hear anything, it could be the cold control where you adjust the temperature. Find the control and with the power off, disconnect the wiring to it and try to figure out which of the wires plugged into it are the power leads.Often there is a ground with a stripe(often green in color) and maybe there is a schematic that will tell you. If you can determine this, jump the wires together using any method that will connect them. I often use a non-vinyl coated paper clip, make sure it is not touching metal and plug it in. If you hear that marvellous sound of power, replace the control. The control lead on chest freezers is uninsulated and is pushed into a hole in the freezer near the control and compressor. It pulls out and you push the new one in(I use some lube). If the relay is the culprit there are aftermarket ones available that have directions and are relatively cheap. Good luck, AJ

I bought mine second hand and think it may be broken. I plugged it in 8 hours ago. I can hear it running but it's not cold yet.

compressor is running overloaded possible problems bad relay/overload /capacitor dirty or clogged condensers if the unit uses a condenser fan suspect a bad fan. and defective thermostats are notorious for short cycling. id check the coils first and if dirty clean up maybe that can be the major problem.

Kenmore chest freezer not working

Remove the panel covering the compressor. Remove the relay plugged on the side of the compressor and shake it. If it rattles or has any burned spots it is shorted out. Try replacing it first. Make sure you replace it with the correct replacement, not a fit-all. If this is not the problem you will need to replace the compressor. If it is less than 5 yrs old the compressor should still be in warranty. If so call Sears, it will be repaired free of charge. If it is out of warranty buy a new freezer.
