I have a Brother HL-4070CDW printer. I am running Mac OS 10.5.8. I reset the toner and ever since then the printer has been offline. I cannot seem to get it back online. I have tried turning the printer on and off and unplugging the USB cable. I still get a notice that the printer is offline.

I don't have the same printer interface on the Mac as on a Microsoft based machine. However, in my desperation I reconfigured the USB cables and "lo and behold", it started working. It was an ugly win, but I'll take it. Thanks for your efforts.

Are you getting Offline on the printer or on your computer?

If it is on the Printer, please remove the toner and re-insert it. Then press the GO button on the printer. The printer should say READY.

If it on your computer, please open the printer (Control Panel / Printers / double click the printer / make sure there is NO check next to use printer offline).

Please post back if this helped or if you have any further questions.

I get a message to replace toner, i replaced and still get the messag

You may want to try the following steps:
  • Step 1 - First turn on your printer: Brother MFC 9840CDW.
  • Step 2 - Push the button on the front of the printer to open the cartridge cover or the front panel of the printer where you can access the toner cartridges. However, do not remove the toner cartridges (Brother TN-115).
  • Step 3 - Push the Clear/Back button and hold still to bring up a reset menu. There are 8 different toner functions ( two Black, two Cyan , two Magenta, and two Yellow).
  • Step 4 - For each of the eight functions in turn, push the O.K. button and then push it again to indicate 'Reset'. After a few seconds, it will say 'Accepted' and will then display a message that the cover is open.
  • Step 5 - Repeat the steps 3 and 4 for each of the other eight toner functions as needed.
  • Step 6 - Once your finished, close the front cover of your printer so the status bar will be reset to normal with no error message.
  • Also, you may want to clean the corona wires for each toner. Clean the corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from left to right and right to left several times.

How do I reset the counter for the drum unit on a Brother MFC 9840-CDW. It says to replace the drum but the unit is printing flawlessly.

On the TN-155 toner cartridge, a mechanical 'flag gear' that will reset the counter for each individual cartridge when first 'triggered'.
After each page print, the appropriate counters are incremented regardless of toner content (that is why it is still printing 'flawlessly') and after a pre-determined count has been reached, you will get a warning to change the drum as is will then be notionally (not actually) empty.
Before you decide to reset the 'flag gear' on the drum, make sure you are not actually nearing the physical empty state ... it might be a wiser decision to purchase a refill kit which should come with instruction on how to fill and reset the 'flag gear' (this needs some dismantling of the drum cartridge) or buy a compatible or genuine toner drum cartridge.
In any case, Google 'Brother drum flag gear' for more information.
Good luck!

Are you purchasing actual Brother Replacement Toners or off name brand ones? I have seen Non-Brother toners cause all kinds of issues. If they are brother, put some tape or a sticky over the clear eye on the side, you will get a few hundred more pages out of them. If you know for a fact there is still toner in them, and they are brother toners, just do this to reset the counters on them.

  1. Turn off the Printer
  2. Press and hold the menu button and turn on. Keep holding button until you see maintenance on the display
  3. Press 88. this brings up parts replacement menu.
  4. Press up arrow until you see the part you replaced or want to reset.
  5. Press the OK button
  6. Power off and restart Printer.

Several printers are connected to my Dell and sometimes without paying attention I forget which printer I'm using. On your print set up page scroll down until to your printer and select it. If you have only one printer, then select it as your default printer.
