SOURCE: my DVD rom cant read CD or DVD

He there it could be one of three things

  1. it could have the same drive letter as a harddrive in your machine. To check this out right cllick on "My Computer" (XP) or "Computer" ( Vista/Win7) then go to manage /Disk Management here you will see your Cd/DVD drive and will be able to change the drive letter if that is the reason
  2. The laser in your drive has become either dirty which means you need to clean it using a standard CD cleaner
  3. The laser is no longer operating correctly and is not reading the disks
Hope all the above helps

Hi, DVD drive issue, new TOSHIBA A660-17t laptop. DVD movies freeze after sometime (at various points). Tried different players - no help. Those movies work on other laptop. Movies from HDD...

The problem here is with the lens. It is weakened by constant playing of media.
It is usually not very advisable to watch movies, or play songs directly from the DVD drive. This is because this damages the lens especially when you rewind and fast forward on it.
When ever you want to watch a movie, it is best you copy it onto your HDD first, then watch. You could delete it later when you are done if you are 'space conscious'.
In the mean time, you would have your lens checked, and probalbly changed.

I hope that this was helpful?
Have a nice day.

I am not able to play my movies recorded dvd but cd is working well, help me,,

Insert a DVD movie.
Open "My Computer".
Right-mouse click on the icon for your CD/DVD drive, and click "Explore".
If the hardware is working correctly, you should see a list of files & folders.

Search online for the free 'VLC' software for playing DVD-movies. Download it, and install it, to "play" your DVD-movie.

Must sony DDU1615 DVD-ROM be set to region 1 in order to read most DVD Movie on PC. At present it is not set to any region but is hit & miss as to what it will recognize and play. I do not want to...

An easy way to make your computer permanently region free is to install "DVD Region + CSS Free":
Yep, or Any DVD ( from Slysoft, which I've bought. Full price is $40, but it's worth it if you have several DVDs from regions outside of your DVD-ROM. Or you can use VLC (, a freeware media player that will play all DVDs, regardless of region coding. And yes, this is legal. (But it can be buggy)

Dvd-rom trouble

Hi, first of all, I'd check if you have the problem with CD/DVDs burned (written on a CD/DVD writer) or you have it also with original CD/DVDs, which would be weird. Depending on your finding to the above point I'd do one thing or another, but to me does not look like a driver problem. I'd check with Toshiba support if there's a new firmware for your drive, this does improve the media the device can read and correct problems like the one you mention. To know the fimware version you're using, open device manager and go find your drive, right click on it and choose details tab. Normally the firmware revision is the number at the end of the instance. Good luck mate !
