Sometimes paper has a tendency to stick to itself when placed directly into the printer. I suggest you fan the paper (like a deck of cards) before you put it in the printer. This will separate the sheets from each other and you should not have the problem.

LexMark 5400 Series All-In-One Printer

Hi,

To clear a paper jam:
  • Pull Carefully
If the sheet of paper is visible at the output slot of the printer (in other word, it stopped on its way out of the printer), try pulling carefully on it. If it pulls smoothly and easily, then carefully pull it the rest of the way out. If there is resistance, then stop and go on to the next step.
  • Open the Cover
Open the printer cover and wait (in the case of an inkjet printer) for the carriage to stop moving. Carefully, slowly pull out any paper that is caught there.
  • Take Care
Do NOT pull paper out from where it was feeding into the printer (where the blank paper enters the device). The rollers on your printer may only go in one direction, and if you force them the wrong way, you could damage the machine.
Be careful of the following:
  • Laser Printers
If you have a laser printer, be very careful when pulling out the paper -- laser printers can get hot.
  • Paper Shreds
If any paper tore, either during the jam or while you were removing them, remove any appliances that you can (paper trays, etc.) and look for the shreds of paper. Try to make sure nothing has been left behind.
If you have frequent paper jams:
  • Don't Overload
Overloading your paper tray can cause paper jams. Your manual may say that your input tray can hold 250 sheets -- but if you keep getting jams, try loading 225 sheets instead.
  • Check the Paper
Check the minimum/maximum paper weights that your printer can handle. Paper that is too thick, or too thin, can cause jams.
Goodluck..

Paper jam - I can see the jam, but don't know how to remove the paper.

Hello

Open the top cover of the printer.

If you can see the jammed paper, take one or more sheets of paper and pull them toward you.

While pulling the paper, press the RESUME button to turn the paper feed rollers.

If the paper needs to be fed in the opposite direction, release the RESUME button and then press it again.

If the paper is still jammed, turn the printer off or remove the power cord from the printer. Then turn the printer back on or plug the power cord in.

The printer will run through a reset cycle, which may clear the paper jam.

If the paper is still jammed or if several (8 to 10) sheets are jammed, take hold of a sheet in the middle of the stack using both hands.

With firm, even pressure, pull the sheet toward you.
Usually, removing one or two sheets from the middle of the stack will release the pressure and the rest of the stack can be removed.

Make sure no scraps of paper are left in the printer.

Close the top cover of the printer.

Try printing again.

The printer keeps telling me it's out of paper, which it isn't

1> Open the sheet feeder cover and pull out the paper support.

Set paper, aligning the right edge of the paper to the cover guide with the paper's print side facing up.

Pinch and slide the paper guide to the paper's left side.

Note: Make sure to set paper lengthwise. Setting Credit Card sized paper long-side down by mistake may cause a paper jam.

Pull down the paper output tray supporting with both hands.

Pull out the extension completely.

Ensure that the Power lamp and the Auto Sheet Feeder lamp light.

Note: If the Cassette lamp lights, press the Paper Feed switch to light the Auto Sheet Feeder lamp.
If the Auto Sheet Feeder lamp does not light even after pressing the Paper Feed switch, Paper Source in the printer driver may be set to the setting other than Paper Feed Switch.

My Brother HL-5740 Is jamming after every print jog. It's pulling two sheets through, the first sheet with the print job and the second sheet clear, Its like every job has two sheets. The second sheet...

You probably need to clean the paper pickup roller above the paper tray. A clean cloth dipped in diluted kitchen detergent and a couple of drops of alcohol, will clean the rubber rollers. Stroke the cleaning cloth firmly from side to side all the way around all the rollers. Also clean the paper separation shoe (rubber pad) at the front of the paper tray. The last thing is to make sure your paper is dry. Damp paper sticks together

My printer spits out a bunch of sheets of paper at one time...how do I fix it?

Clean it with.....Compressed Air (get a can of it and keep one around at all times to keep all computer hardware CONSTANTLY dust free!)

Don't load too much paper at once.... the weightof the paper can force extra sheets to get pulled into the printer while it's trying to pull just one sheet!

Putting out extra sheets

Do you "fan" your paper when you fill the machine? paper will adhere together, unless you " grab any corner of the fill, pull towards that same corner to allow air to get between the sheets.

Extra paper pulled

Some rubber lining or rollers is out of line, if you can fix that it may work properly.
