Question about iRiver H340 MP3 Player

1 Answer

Iriver h340 i have an iriver h340 and am using it as an external hd. More specifically, Time machine backups for leopard on my mac. now, when i press the play button, nothing happens. If i keep pressing it, eventually i can here the hd spin. The screen stays black. It clicks inside slightly (has always done this just before it turns on) and then stops spinning and nothing happens. If I press the reset button, the same happens. Plugging it into the power adapter doesn't work. I really need the info thats on it, and am not worried about loosing the player, its 2 years old no warrenty left so really don't mind taking it apart to hook it up to something else if thats possible.. pleas please help!!

Re: iriver h340

Have you tried a program such as drive rescue (I got a portable version (for PC)from
Likewise roadkill's unstoppable copier(google it, sorry no link) I don't know of Mac equivalents.

From memory the hard drive is a 1.8" Toshiba drive. If this is the case, you can get a USB enclosure to plug it into. (I got one on eBay for a similar situation with a faulty X-drive) You will need to pull the h340 apart before you buy it because there are a couple of pin configurations for 1.8 in drives. If you have to resort to cracking it open there was a video on youtube (I think) showing you how.

MisticRiver For iriver Enthusiasts would have more detail, I am going from memory and has been a long time.

Window XP does not recognize my H340 after battery change.

H340 should show as a removable disk drive. Ensure it is formatted as Fat32, run chkdsk, or scandisk. Does the H340 boot into play mode? you did not say. I replaced my battery with no problems... so if it boots Ok it is a non-related fault.

Putiing music on the iriver h340

iRiver has a special DRM signature, and only recognizes certain file formats. iTunes will ont work with the iRiver, for instance. Here are the formats recognized:
MP3 file
: WMA file
: OGG file
: ASF file
: IRM file
What is IRM (iRiver Rights Management)?
The IRM is digital copyright information file designed by iRiver
Limited. The IRM technology protects copyright and property from
unauthorized usage of digital contents provided through iRiver

Use the proprietary software found on the IRiver website to transfer songs. If they still won't play, run the songs through Media Monkey or another Mp3 Converter to make them playable.

Player locks up occasionally

Sound slike a corrupt DB. iRiver's website is one of the more helpful sites i've encountered, even though the good information is buried in a hidden location. Try getting the firmware upgrade for the player to see if it will resolve the issue first:

Also, double check the menu for reset and recovery options - also available from iRiver website.

Dropped the iriver. Headphone socket & power socket not working

This unit needs a technician to probably open it and assess the damage, most likely it just has dry joints and they need soldering.
