My gateway 9300 was stolen last year. The police recovered it and returned it to me. The person who stole it put a pop password on it. How can I get into the machine. I also think they removed the operating system

Removing the battery does not always fix your issue. Some computers have ic chips with redundancy built in to prevent theft and to protect sensitive data. If removing the cmos battery does not solve your problem you may have to send your computer in to a reputable shop so they can fix it in house. Check ebay for bios removal store fronts and email the sellers to see if they can fix your machine.

The easiest way is to remove the cmos cell that allows the bios to save the password

when u remove the cmos cell all the default settings of you laptop will come into effect hence removing the password
cmos cell is located inside the laptop on the motherboard

getting it done by a tech helper is seriously recommended

Auto-electrician or an auto-locksmith, or auto alarm installer.

Or call the police non-emergency number and say your car key was stolen, you know who by and they haven't returned it to you.

The metal key will still get them inside the car. Tell the police you are worried about getting into the car and finding this person hiding in the back seat!

Did you have some type of tracking software such as Lojack or Prey? If so turn it on from any other PC and it will track the laptop's location (by GPS) once the person who stole it gets on the internet. It will also take pictures of them without them knowing it if it has a camera. Simply take the GPS Location report and the pictures to the Police and they will go pick up the laptop. You have to find the person that put the Hard Drive Password on. I'm not saying you stole the laptop, but 99% of the time if a person has a laptop and does not know the hard drive password, the laptop is stolen. The original Owner put the password on the hard drive to keep thieves from getting to sensitive data. It could have been set remotely by the original owner if the laptop i stolen.

So who put the password on it? 99% of the time if there is a Hard Drive Password and the person in possession of the laptop don't know the password, the laptop is stolen. The original owner put the password lock on the hard drive to keep thieves from getting to sensitive data. The owner could have set the password remotely once the laptop was stolen. Your system is toast. The only remedy is to get the original owner to remove the password.
