I am unable to get a screen to boot using a pci express slot

I am able to get a screen using a pci slot graphics card but the computer will not recognise a pci express card?

Maybe your pci isn't compatible with your pc, or download the recommended driver for it.

I'm just going to pick the first one out of the list, for an example.
All model numbers should use the same motherboard, but even if not; they all will have a PCI-Express x16 slot for a graphics card.

Coming up from the bottom of the motherboard, there are 3 black PCI-Express x4 slots.

Right above the top one is a longer black PCI-Express x16 slot.
This is where a PCI Express graphics card goes.

For some puny graphics cards, you might get away with having a 300 to 350 Watt power supply, but if I had to replace it; I wouldn't go less than 500 Watts.

You should have at least 10 percent more power (Power Supply), than what is needed. It's easier on the Power Supply, and better all around for the computer system.

My ATI firepro V7800 makes continuous beeping noise. PC does not boot when I turn it on.....pls help!!!


1) Believe the continuous beeping you hear is a BIOS Beep Code, stating you have a graphics problem. Computer, not video card, is beeping.

2) Do you have the external 6-pin PCI-Express power cable plugged into the graphics card, from the Power Supply?

3) IF, your Power Supply does not have a 6-pin PCI-Express power cable, are you using TWO 4-pin Peripheral power cables, connected to a 6-pin PCI-Express adapter power cable?

The ATI FirePro V7800 graphics card requires 150 Watts by itself.

The PCI-Express x16 expansion slot CANNOT deliver the recommended power (Wattage) needed, therefore an external power cable capable of delivering 75 Watts is needed.

What happens if you just use ONE 4-pin Peripheral power cable, in a 6-pin PCI-Express adapter power cable?

The PCI-Express x16 expansion slot contact pins -> BURN

The gold plated contact pins on the bottom of the graphics card -
BURN

The connection on the graphics card for the 6-pin PCI-Express power cable - BURNS

The contact pins in the 6-pin PCI-Express adapter power cable -

If it is too bad, and cannot be remedied by cleaning, the motherboard is TOAST, and so is the graphics card.

Use of PCI-e x16 slot for non-video card

WHY would you want to do that?

There is a PCI-Express x1 slot on the motherboard.
Black in color, and in-between the black PCI-Express x16 slot, and a white PCI slot.

Use the PCI-E x1 RAID adapter card in the PCI-E x1 slot, and a PCI-Express graphics card in the PCI-E x16 slot. Sheesh!

A PCI-Express slot is not an evolved PCI slot.
Completely different technologies.

PCI uses a shared Parallel bus architecture, while PCI-Express is based on Serial point-to-point.

So your idea of how to 'fix' your problem, is to use a PCI-E x1 card in a PCI-Express x16 slot, and a PCI graphics card in a PCI slot?

Completely backwards.

The Northbridge chip handles the Faster capabilities of a computer.
Handles the Processor, Ram Memory, and HIGH-SPEED Graphics.

HIGH-SPEED graphics is the Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) technology, and the PCI-Express technology.

The Southbridge chip handles the Slower capabilities of a computer.

The PCI bus is one of those slower capabilities handled by the Southbridge chip.

The PCI bus is also a shared bus. This slows data down.
The AGP bus, and PCI-Express bus are Not shared. They also have a direct link to the Northbridge chip.

The PCI Bus has to go through the Southbridge chip, which has to go through the Internal Bus, THEN to the Northbridge chip.

OnBoard video, or Integrated Graphics, uses the PCI bus.
When you inserted the PCI-E x1 RAID card in the PCI-Express x16 slot, and a PCI graphics card in the PCI slot, BIOS just assigned another IRQ for the PCI-Express x16 slot.
(Interrupt Request)

No fancy technology going on there.

Backwards technology going on with a PCI-Express x1 card in a PCI-Express x16 slot, though.

I do not concur, and do not think that is a good solution, Kevin.

Display Card is also known as Graphics Card, or Video Card.
It is a separate adapter card that plugs into the motherboard.

On the graphics card is a GPU. Graphics Processing Unit,

IF, a GPU is mounted directly to the motherboard, and not removable, (Therefore not replaceable), it is Integrated Graphics.
Also known as OnBoard graphics.

ON the motherBOARD.

Computer manufacturers, and consumers, erroneously refer to Integrated graphics as a graphics card.

Manufacturer's because they are trying to push a product, consumers because the industry has taught them wrong.

There are several styles of desktop computers. The two main styles with variations, is the 'pizza-box' style, and the tower style.

Depending upon the style, there may be a 'Daughter Card or Daughter board', placed in a slot on the motherboard.
In a slot on the daughter card, the graphics card is placed.

There are 3 main types of graphics expansion slots used. (Older one is ISA, but left out due to age)

PCI, AGP and PCI-Express.
These are technologies. They are also the names of the individual graphics expansion slots, the graphics card sits in.

Now,...you are essentially working on a laptop with a touchscreen.
Once you remove the 10 screws from the Back Cover, and remove the cover, you are looking at the exposed circuitry of the computer.

You NEED to follow Anti-Static Precautions. This cannot be performed as on a regular desktop computer. Touching the metal frame (Of the unplugged from power computer) will do you No good.

You need to use an ESD wrist strap, and connect it's alligator clip to a good ground source. [ Electro Static Discharge]

Your body carries Static electricity. Static WILL fry out (Short Circuit) the delicate hardware components inside a computer.

With the Back Cover off the manufacturer knows all of the hardware components are exposed. This means the person working on the computer should be aware of Static issues, and use proper tools.

The average consumer is not aware of this. This is why only a ram memory upgrade is recommended by the manufacturer. (Before they went out of business)

This is why there are no service manuals released, also.
Only for the qualified authorized service techs.

So,...let's look together. See if there is a PCI-Express x16 slot, for one.
It can be any color. Will be longer than any other expansion slot on the motherboard. The PCI slots (Usually white) are not as long.
(164 contact pins. 82 on each side)

These examples of a PCI slot, and versions of a PCI-Express slot, are all the same color. (Yellow) Not usual for a desktop computer.

You need to be concerned with;

A) How much height is available for the graphics card, and how much length? Check the measurements inside the computer. Match to dimensions of the graphics cards you are looking at.

B) How much POWER does the graphics card require? It's in the Minimum Requirements stated for the graphics card.
How much power is available to the all-in-one computer?

This could be an instant stopping block.

AMD ATI Radeon graphics cards generally use less power, than a comparable Nvidia graphics card.

C) Worried about your computer per se uses DDR Sdram ram memory, and the graphics card uses GDDR3 ram memory? (Just an example. Not directly related to Your computer)

Don't be. Doesn't matter what graphics memory a graphics card uses.

The graphics card does Not rely on the system resources (Processor and Ram Memory) of the computer.
A graphics card has it's own Processor, (GPU. Graphics Processing Unit), and graphics ram memory.

The Asus ATI Radeon HD6450 uses a PCI-Express x16 expansion slot.

So you know the graphics card will fit. Low-profile to boot.

Power requirement:
The Compaq Presario SR2020NX desktop computer comes with a 300 Watt power supply.
(Although in actuality it's more like 70 percent of the maximum rated wattage. 210 Watts)

Enough power for the computer, and the graphics card.
ATI graphics cards do not use as much power as a comparable Nvidia graphics card.

Don't be. The graphics cards graphics memory runs independent of the computer's ram memory.

Doesn't matter if the PCI Express graphics card uses the PCI Express 2.0 technology, or the PCI Express 2.1 technology.

The PCI Express graphics card, will insert into the PCI Express x16 expansion slot on the motherboard.

To the left of the CMOS Battery (BATT) are three white PCI slots.

WHEN installing a graphics card, ALWAYS install the software from the CD disk provided, First!

Computer on, and Windows running, insert the graphics card's Installation disk, (CD) into the optical drive tray.
Install the software by following the directions.

THEN shut the computer down normally, and unplug the computer from power.
OBSERVE Anti-Static Precautions.
Install the graphics card.
Close the computer case, and plug the monitor into the graphics card.

Turn the computer on.

When you install a device (Such as a graphics card for example), Windows will try to find compatible drivers.
IF, THE driver is not installed First, Windows will match up one of it's thousands of generic drivers.

This = No.

You want THE driver installed first, so that Windows will find it, and Not try to match on of it's generic drivers.

NOTE 2*
It DOESN'T MATTER what graphics ram memory the graphics card has.
The graphics card's Processor and Ram Memory operates independent of the system resources.

Example:
The computer uses DDR Sdram ram memory.
The graphics card uses GDDR5 graphics ram memory.

It will work just fine.

NOTE 3*
It does NOT matter if your computer uses the PCI Express 1.1 technology, and the graphics card uses the PCI Express 2.0, or 2.1 technology.

PCI Express 2.0, and 2.1 technology is Backward Compatible with PCI Express 1.1 technology.

Will you get the full capability of the PCI Express 2.0, or 2.1 graphics card?
NO

Will you notice?
NO


What you need to look at it, is how much power will the graphics card use. Look at the system requirements for the graphics card, and be sure your Power Supply has enough power for that graphics card.

Also, IF, the graphics card requires additional power cables from the Power Supply, make sure your Power Supply has the required power cable, or power cables.
IF the Power Supply does not, use a power adapter cable.


NOTE 4*
Graphics card manufacturer's base the power needed for the graphics card, Not just on the graphics card itself, but on an entire computer system, AND the graphics card.

The graphics card manufacturers use a test computer system, that is a powerful computer system.
Gamer motherboard, Dual Core, or Quad Core processor, 4GB of ram memory, and at least two harddrives, and two optical drives, PLUS the graphics card in question.

This complete computer system uses a LOT more power than just the graphics card by itself.

There isn't a single graphics card out there, that uses more than 150 Watts by itself.

Budget to medium:

Type of video card


The Compaq Presario SR1630NX desktop computer, has a PCI-Express x16 slot on the motherboard, for a PCI-Express graphics card.

The Presario SR1630NX came out in 2005.
PCI-Express 2.0 technology came out January 15, 2007.

The Presario SR1630NX uses the PCI-Express 1.1 technology.

You can use a graphics card based on the PCI Express 2.0 technology, however.

PCI Express 2.0 is Backward Compatible with PCI Express 1.1

You just won't get the full capability, of a graphics card based on the PCI Express 2.0 technology.

Either your graphics card has gone bad or - the PCI Express slot on the motherboard has failed. Alternately you could put the card in another computer and see if it works. you could take it to a local pc shop and have it tested. I work for TechSupportPros of Spokane, WA - I would test the card for free.

It looks like your trying to install a PCI Graphics Adapter. If that is the case, I would try the PCI Graphics Adapter any Slot other than Slot 1 or Slot 2. That is unless, your PCI Graphics Adapter Card is a PCI Express, then that must be installed in Slot 1, if the Board supports it. If the PCI Graphics Adapter is a PCI-I Card then it must be installed in Slot 2.

Check AMD's site, they have or already implemented standards on their support chips. The standard, as I understand it, is Slot 1 - PCI Express, Slot 2 - PCI-I, if you're using those Slot for PCI Graphics Adapter.

It should be possible to use those Slots (1 & 2) for any PCI Cards that is not a PCI Graphics Adapter, be careful, I have not checked that out. Those do not handshake as Video Adapter, so the PCI card should not be thrown or overdriven, the PCI-Express and PCI-I, to my knowledge is only for Grahpics Adapters, should that be different, then Slot 1 for only PCI Express Cards and Slot 2 for only PCI-I Cards.

Me, for now, Slot 1 for Express, Slot 2 for PCI-I, and the rest of the Slot for all else. If your PCI Graphics Adapter is not an Express or PCI-I, install in any Slot other than Slot 1 or Slot 2.
