Computer will indicate power but power light keeps on flashing, no hard drive light, no fans or anything else, power light on screen, screen black

Your computer power supply has shut down with circuit protection. Look for equipment or leads that have shorted out.
Remove all the equipment until only the monitor is plugged in.
If this works restore the equipment one by one until you find the fault.
Try this order
hard drives
If it does not work with just the monitor it is either a faulty power supply or a faulty motherboard.
The Power supply is a the cheapest one to buy, to find out which is faulty.

I forgot administrator password. how do i restore to factory settings on a compaq?

If we are talking about Windows passwords You can restore from OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) CD.
You can also obtain a program that will reset your password from outside Windows. I have one and have used it successfully several times.
If you need a password to access HP's boot process or BIOS then you may be able to get a program that will do this also or find a "backdoor" password for access. It seems many manufacturers created a backdoor password for just such a situation. If it is your BIOS that you need a password for start with obvious passwords like "backdoor", "password", "doowssap"(password spelt backwards) and anything else you can think of.

Ethernet port not working. can i connect from my dsl by using a usb cable instead.

Yes, if your dsl modem is equipped with a usb option, you can hook it up to your computer but remember to remove the ethernet cord 1st. Both ethernet and usb cannot be connected at the same time. Once connected, your machine may search for a driver to install the modem via the usb port but it should work, especially if it's a westell. Best of luck.

Usb ports not working, drivers ok,

Click on the link below and scroll down to the "Fixit" button. This is a patch to enable USB devices. This is a common problem especially after running Windows Update. Good luck.

Hard drive interface

Hi nortocd

(01) It will work in your USB hard disk enclosure if the enclosure supports SATA. If the enclosure supports the older style (ATA/EIDE) interface, then you'll just need to get an enclosure that supports SATA for your new hard disk. I like the Nextar external HDD (hard disk drive) enclosures.

You can find many external HDD enclosures made by various manufacturers these days. They're available for 3.5" (laptop-sized) and 5.25" (desktop PC-sized) HDDs supporting ATA/EIDE, SATA and SCSI HDDs and even Optical drives (DVD, etc.) Newegg is a great online source for computer & high tech-related equipment. They're prices are very competitive and their customer service is excellent. You can also find customer reviews of most of the products they sell, too, which can be very helpful.

(02) If you'd like this HDD to be portable, then I recommend you use an external HDD enclosure. They are available w/ USB and w/ eSATA connections (for connecting externally to your computer(s)). I don't recommend using IEEE1394 (firewire) as USB 2.0 is faster. eSATA is faster than USB 2.0 but is not a commonly available external connection on most computers yet.

(03) If a SATA port (connection) is not available inside your computer, you can install a SATA controller (if an expansion card slot is available in your computer) and connect your new HDD to the new controller.

(04) You can find information regarding your Compaq Presario HERE.

(05) I checked your motherboard specifications HERE. Your computer's original equipment does not support SATA. However, if you'd still like the HDD to be installed internally, just install a SATA controller and connect the new HDD to the SATA controller.

What is in my comp usb 2.0? Ilink? usb interface? /

If this computer is running Windows, go to the control panel, click on the "system" icon, then click on "device manager".

That will tell you in detail what you have.

It's easier to tell from looking at the case.

You'll know if you have USB. If you're looking for iLink, it will be called "firewire".

If you want to make sure you have USB 2.0, it's probably USB 2.0 if the PC is 2-3 years old or newer.

I assume you're asking for this because you want to see if you move video to it? If you want to use iLink/Firewire, you can probably add an expansion card. Same for USB 2.0.
