Battery won't hold charge, but mower will start using a jump pack. After running it , when you cut it off it just clicks when you turn the key to crank it.

check all the connections for a loose or corroded joint. the stater could also be bad. check to see if it is charging when running with a meter.

The engine clicks when i turn key, how do I determine if it is the solenoid or starter?

try jumping the battery with your car battery first. if it cranks, charge battery and possibly adjust valves. If not, try jumping directly to the starter. If that works, replace the starter solenoid. If not, might be the starter itself.

When turning ignition key to start engine the flywheel only turns 1/4 around and then stops when starting motor.

From experience I would suspect a broken decompressor lever on the camshaft. A battery fails very fast when starter comes to a dead stop a few times. Try a fully charged battery but if the problem comes straight back I'd bet on the camshaft. A car battery can usually push the engine over the excess compression. If it is the decompressor engine has to be taken apart.

Hi Ron,

You didn't give a make and model number, so I will just give a generic answer.

If your lawn tractor will run when jump started only, then your battery is dead. Replace your battery.

When you turn the key over it is not starting, it

If its just one click each time you hit the key, may be starter. I would check to make sure the battery is not dead or bad. If it is a bunch of clicks at once, its probably a dead battery. But why is it dead? Possible- Old battery, left lights or power on, maybe didnt close door all the way, or alternator going bad and not charging battery. Try to jump it or charge/replace battery.

Dead starter, I think!

it does sound as though your starter is dead , depending on the make/model of starter you might be able to get a replacement carbon brush pack which will save a lot of money , please post the starter /engine details

Craftsman lawn tractor sudden no fire repiaced

Check for a sheared flywheel key. One way to check is to move the piston to top dead center and look at the position of the magnets on the stator in relation to the poles on the magneto. If the positions aren't very close at TDC, the flywheel key is most likely sheared, which is why you are not getting spark. Did the tractor blades hit anything hard lately when mowing? The key is made of soft metal so that if something like that happens, it will fail before the crankshaft gets bent or to prevent heavier damage. Anyway, you might want to check it out. Hope this helped and best wishes.

How to tell if your solenoid is back

Probably. Try jumping across the two post. If that turns over your engine, replace the solenoid. Or, another way to check it is to disconnect the wire on your starter, hook a test light to it and turn your key to start. If the test light does not light up, the solenoid is bad. Remember to hold the clutch/brake pedal down when you turn key to start.

93 buick lesabre 3.8 liter starter replaced, new one just clicks

Given the steps you have taken, only one of two things this can be is a resistive connection between the battery and the starter solenoid terminal. Or the battery itself has a bad internal connection. Bear in mind: you cannot crank the engine through the average set of jumper cables unless the battery in the dead vehicle will hold and deliver a good charge. Jumper cables are not really intended to start the car, they are for boosting the good, but low battery in the car being jumped.
