On the ISE 17 batch feed disposer, I would like to know how to remove small metal box with switch mechanism on the outside of the unit. This must be removed to service/replace the batch switch.

There is a screw in the middle. Parts diagram shows it, and the instructions from the previous repair were found.

Insinkerator works but doesn't drain

A clog in the ISE. UNPLUG and look inside the top via the sink. If possible, run a small cleaning snake into the ISE drain and do what you can to clear the drain.
Count your sponges, etc to see if anything might have ended up in the ISE by mistake.

It won't turn on. It buzzes but that's

Blades are bound up. Unplug the unit under the sink and using an allen wrench (one should have come with the unit, looks like a bent rod with 8 sides on it), insert it into the manual turn fixture on the bottom center of the ISE. Use this to turn the unit by hand to see if you can free it. If you can free it, see if you can find something inside the sink drain that might have caused the blades to bind up. Remove any debris and reset the circuit breaker, a small button, on the bottom of the unit as well. Also, the ISE needs to hang straight down below the sink. If it is pulled one way or another due to the way it is hooked to the plumbing, the blades may bind up and keep from running.

Garbage disposal won't turn on; when I turn on switch, I can hear a humming sound.

Sounds like the cutting blades are bound up. Unplug the unit under the sink and insert an appropriate sized allen wrench into the center of the motor shaft on the flat end of the ISE; the lowest point of the unit under the sink. This allen wrench will allow you to manually turn the cutting blades and possibly free whatever may be binding them up. DO THIS WITH THE UNIT UNPLUGGED! You may have to look into the top of the unit to see if there is something you have pulled free that should be removed prior to using the ISE again.

Whirlaway 191 Garbage Disposal hardware is stuck on sink

If your unit has the ISE type mount as shown in the image (three screws), you should be able to back those three screws out, push up on the flange that the screws went through, and remove the snap ring from the groove. The whole assembly will come apart at that point.

My garbage disposal doesn't turn on, I checked the plug and it works. What do you think is the problem?

Every disposal I've seen or installed has had a RESET button. If there is no sound at all when you switch the unit ON, look/feel around the bottom of the unit for a small button (usually RED). Press the button in, and then try the switch again.

If the unit makes a humming sound when switched on, something is binding the mechanism and preventing the blades from spinning. If this is the case, unplug the unit and then spin it to remove blockage and free the blade mechanism. If the unit came with a large allen wrench, you can insert it in the bottom of the unit and turn it to free the blades. No wrench, no problem. Insert a small piece of pipe, a pipe wrench handle, or (my favotite) a 3/8 or 1/2 inch socket extension bar into the top of unit and turn the blade assembly until it spins freely. Once the blade assembly is freed, the unit should operate normally.

Disposer fails to shut off when drain plug is remove. Insinkerator 17 is batch feed - only operates when drain cover is inserted. Mine fails to shut off, as it should, when drain cover is removed.

You should run some salt through it. The safety switch is either stuck in the operate position or broken. The cover operates the switch. If it gets too much debris build up on it, it will stick.
