Question about Kenmore Refrigerators

1 Answer

I have a 1993 Kenmore 21 Refrigerator, model # 106.9731680. The icemaker is not working. When I first looked at the icemaker I noticed that the ejector blades were stuck in the ice at about the 4:00 o'clock position and that the ice was very high in the mold@heater assembly tray. Also noticed that the ice tray had about a half an inch of frozzen water with ice cubes inbeded in it(the ice cubes were stuck together at the top in groups of four or more). I toke off the mold@heater assembly tray and thoughed out the water and reinstalled it. Then observed that in about 10 seconds the mold@heater assembly would fill with water and start to over flow into the ice tray. I then tried to adjust the little plastic set screw on the right hand side of the module assembly(my model did not come with the ice cube size adjustment knob). NO matter witch way I turned the set screw the water still flowed for about 10 seconds and the problem would repeat itself. My main question before I go to buy parts, should I replace the Module assembly first (because it is allowing to much water flow based on some internal gear or valve problem) or should I replace the Valve/Solenoid first because it is sticking open too long? Or is their another cause of this problem that I did not consider?

IMO, your problem is the solenoid that controls the flow of water to the ice maker. This is a very common problem on a unit that is 16 years old. If you replace the solenoid your problem should be solved.

Looking for a free owners manual download for a kenmore cold spot model#106.50442902. Can't get ice maker to work...water goes through d ispenser......?

A copy of your owners manual can be found here.

Although I would say there is probably nothing in this that will solve the icemaker not working. This is a complicated unit and there are several different things that can cause the icemaker to stop working!

First thing to check is that it is not jammed.. Lift the cover and make sure a cube is not stuck in there.

After changing the water filter, the ice maker is not working. The water dispenser is working properly.

You may need to replace the dual water control valve due to only the water dispenser side of the water control valve being the only side that works. What is the model number of your Kenmore refrigerator? Kenmore model numbers look like this=> 321.235689 as an example. An example of the water control valve if your model number was 321.235689 is part number=> 12001414 Water Inlet Valve

Don't use this example as the correct part. Look around the fresh food section door frame for your correct model number, Thanks

Replace icmaker on kenmore

Unplug refrigerator. Take a moment to examine how the icemaker is positioned in the freezer compartment prior to proceeding (e.g.: water inlet tubing coming into the icemaker, etc.). Remove or loosen (where applicalble) screws holding icemaker. Unplug icemaker's wire harness connection. install new icemaker by reversing the screws harness, etc. Make certain that the new icemaker is in the "on" position. Plug the refrigerator in. Allow approximately 6 to 8 hours (some models take fewer or longer timeframe) for ice production.

Loud noise from JD-21 ice maker

Usually a stripped gear or a bad icemaker motor. Remove the icemaker front cover by using a flat screwdriver to pry it off between the bottom of the icemaker and the cover. Inspect the icemaker to see if the large white plastic gear has any broken teeth or is cracked in the middle. The motor is in the 10:00 position of the white gear. If the gear is ok, and the noise is coming from the motor, replace the motor.
After unplugging the refrigerator you can remove the motor assembly by removing three screws in the mounting plate, and then two screws holding the motor on. The parts house also sells the complete icemaker, however your refrigerator is already 29 years old if I am reading your model number correctly. Good Luck, Appliance Specialists

My Kenmore side by side refrigerator model 106.5686*601 is leaking water from the ice maker inside the freezer.

Icemaker leaks are common and cannot always be solved. May need a new Icemaker. Ofter you can obtain a kit from Lowes (use a Whirlpool kit.)

Kenmore side by side refrigerator 566625 ice maker won't work

you have a bad motor module on your icemaker. this can be confirmed by removing the front cover on the i/m and you will notice the center pins for the i/m are either broken off or twisted together. the part nnumber you need is 8201515 and is very easy to replace. peyton
