PSU hangs the system: can't turn on; turns of in 30 min

Please help. I have 2 weeks old machine with following problems: Nothing happens when power button is pushed, however if power plug is unpluged and then pluged back again it starts. Well it seems like it starts, but PSU works very loud and nothing happens - no system beep, screen is black and no reaction to anything except turn-off button. Some times it starts correctly. then it can work for about 30 min, and then PSU starts working very loud and couple of seconds later screen goes black and no reaction to anything.

Either the power supply needs replaced or there is a short on the board...

pull the mb and guts of the system out of the chassis

connect the power supply with one cpu and one stick of memory for testing.. no add-in cards installed

then test the power capabilities..

if the system works out of the chassis.. ( alot of work to do ...understood )then there is short to the chassis of the from the motherboard

i really think the power supply is the issue though

You could check to see if the northbridge or southbridge chips are overheating, but it sounds like one or more capacitors are bad even though they don't look defective(bulging or leaking). You did a good job narrowing it down. Probably best to just retire that motherboard.

My 3210 fails to start up the repair shop says it the motherboard replaced it and the cpu and the psu and it still doesnt start up any ideas

if you have change already the motherboard, cpu and psu here is what you need to do to check your pc by yourself and may be figure out what the cause of the problem.

1. connect the connector on your psu the motherboard. connect psu connector for hard drive, cdrom drive exhaust fan.
2. turn on the pc. look inside, if you see the led on the motherboard turn green then there's a power coming out from the psu.
3. hear the hard drive if its working, you can feel it vibrate.
4. check the little blower in the video card, if its spinning then there is supply in it.

when you turn on your pc the logo on the screen on the monitor will display. should you not see it, check if the monitor is plug in the ac outlet or the extension of your computer. if you see it then monitor is good. If this display followed by a dark screen with no signal display, then it means it is receiving no signal from your video card. go check the vga cable if its properly fix to the monitor and the video card. you can also detach the video card from the motherboard and reseat it properly. this sometime is the fix for no display.

If after booting after the logo, nothing else but dark screen, then is suggest you loosen the harddrive and reseat the connector properly, restart the system again. you can also check if the voltage from the power supply is dropping when there is a load in it. using a multitester test the 4pin connector. readings from the red wireshould be +5vdc and the yellow +12vdc. If its dropping then system will hang. check if there is shorted in your cpu, most of the time it is the blower or exhaust fan.

post back your findings so i can still help you out.
goodluck

It seems that the power supply unit has gone. If you power it on and nothing happens then obviously the psu has gone. The heat that you felt was the psu overheating because of no fan and hence no ventilation. The noise was of the faulty psu fan that got stuck or did not work and the psu got overheated and got burnt eventually. Please replace it with a new one as a repaired psu may work but you cant rely on it.
