HP had a recall on some of their laptops to rectify this problem .I would check with their customer service to see if this model is one of their recalls

If it only does it running on battery power, try adjusting your power saver option. You may also want to run a program like Malwarebytes (free) to make sure it isn't some spyware causing the problem. http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Laptop screen in complete darkness but external monitor works fine

Make sure to check that it's plugged in on both ends - at the motherboard and on back of the screen.

The other possibility is that your inverter got shorted out somewhere along the way. Try shining a flashlight on the screen - if the cable is plugged in ok you will see a faint imge.
