Question about Dell 942 All-In-One InkJet Printer

Dell Printer IO942 not communicating with laptop -I tried switching out usb cable and still unable to connect to this printer. When I disconnect and reconnect usb cable I do not get found new hardware pop up. I swopped-out printers and when I plugged in USB for new printer my laptop immediately found new hardware - is the problem with the Dell IO942 printer and is it bad?

You've tried to uninstall and reinstall the printer driver of your printer. But still no luck. The printer still won't print. Or it would say printing but it won't finish printing.

You can try these steps:

1.Check if the firewall is blocking any printer services

2.Check what port the printer is using (reenable the bi-directional support) and if it's on online mode

3.Disable all the firewalls

4.Uninstall the printer driver and software

5.Delete any items under the ff keys:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows NT x86\Drivers\Version-2

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows NT x86\Drivers\Version-3

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet001\Control\Print\Environments\Windows NT x86\Drivers\Version-2

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet001\Control\Print\Environments\Windows NT x86\Drivers\Version-3

Optional***
6.Delete any non default items under the ff keys:
Note: ONLY THE NON DEFAULT ITEMS SHOULD BE DELETED
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet001\Control\Print\Monitors
Default items are as follows:
AppleTalk Printing Devices
BJ Language Monitor
Local Port
PJL Language Monitor
Standard TCP/IP Port
USB Monitor
Windows NT FAx Monitor

7.Delete any items under the ff keys:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet001\Control\Print\Printers

8.Completely remove drivers by doing the ff: (Option for comm failure because of the upgrade from xp to vista)
Ensure there are no documents in queue.

Disconnect printer’s USB cable.

Click the Start pearl, then click All programs, Printers, Dell xxx (where “xxx” is the printer model number) and then Uninstall. Complete the uninstall utility.

From the start search box type spool and press .

The spool folder located at c:\windows\system32\spool opens.

Rename c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\w32X86 to c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\backup.

Rename c:\windows\system32\spool\prtprocs\W32X86 to c:\windows\system32\spool\prtprocs\backup.

9.Restart the computer.

10.Check th services status

Start-Run- Type Services.msc and Click on Open

You will see long list of services

You need to make sure following 4 Services are set to Automatically start

Remote Procedure Call RPC
Remote Procedure Call RPC Locater
LexBce Server
Print Spooler

11.Reinstall the latest printer driver

Hello there ! 

Do you have its installation software? pls  install it again make sure the printer is not on .

After the  software installation is over  the  software will search for the added printer so the printer should be on at this time . 

If found the printer will be installed and ready to use 

If  no change  the printer registry (circuit board ) might be faulty

Try to reinstall the driver or change the USB cable.In worst case there is a problem in logic board assembly in your printer

you first need to restart the system and then try to turn off the printer and disconnect the cable and wait for 20-30 seconds and connect the cables and check , if it does not then u might have to unisntall and reinstall the printer driver and set it up again.

When I try to scan or print a message comes up telling me to ck power and usb connections. I have unplugged and restarted computer 4 times and still have problem


It could be a communications error message, the printer is not communicating with the computer.

  • Disconnect and then reconnect the USB cable.
  • Disconnect and then reconnect the printer power cable.
  • Restart the computer.
  • Remove and reinstall the printer software

  • If your printer does not function properly or communication error messages appear when using your printer, you can remove and reinstall the printer software.
    1. Click Start®Programs or All Programs®Dell Printers®Dell Photo AIO Printer 962®Uninstall Dell Photo AIO Printer 962.

    2. Follow the instructions on the computer screen to remove the printer software.

    3. Restart your computer before installing the software again.

    I'm trying g to connect my Dell AIO 922 printer to


    You need to go to Control Panel add/remove programs and remove all Printer programs. Then disconnect the USB cable, install the printer software until a message comes up that says plug in your printer. If no message comes up, complete the software installation and then plug in the USB cable. The computer should find the printer at this time.

    that printer uses what is known as a serial cable. The software uses 2 way communication through this and if you try and use a USB to serial it will not be able to communicate back. you may want to try this website for more information

    I have seen that in most of the cases (with lexmark and dell printers) it is fixed by reinstalling the printer software. Be sure that you completely remove the older drivers using the cd or using add/remove programs.

    Printer does not Communicate (connect) following Microsoft SP3


    Try this, uninstall the printer drivers and shut down the system.
    Disconnect the USB cable and restart the computer.
    Once in windows reconnect the USB cable and let windows find the printer and install it.
    If it asks for the CD insert it and follow the onscreen prompts.

    Can the printer accomplish a self test print?

    Have you tried re-seating the USB or re-connecting the printer cable?

    Have you tried moving the USB cable to another port on the computer to determine if it is communicating with the computer. When you un-plug, and re-plug you should get a disconnect tone if the laptop is speaker equiped? Do you get this tone?

    Unable to print


    With the Lexmark printers communication subsystem you MUST let the driver ask for you to plug in the printer. DO NOT plug the printer into the USB port until told to do so.

    To fix a fouled install :
    (1) Uninstall the Lexmark drivers in Add Remove Programs
    (2) Shutdown the computer
    (3) Disconnect the printer from the USB port
    (4) Restart the computer
    (5) Run the Driver Installation software
    (6) Cancel ALL attempts by windows to auto install the printer
    (7) When the sofware asks for the printer connect it and continue
