Duh, what does the error message say? Use the status monitor to get more info about the message. Chances are it will say "parts inside the printer have reached the end of their life..."
This means the waste ink counter has hit it's limit and needs to be reset after cleaning the pads.
This rescue kit will fix you up.

I had/have the same printer and the same problem. I am running Windows XP.
Go to the "Control Panel.
Select "Scanner and Cameras"
You should see your device listed here. If not then add it.
Select your device and you will see "Welcome to the Scanner and Camera Wizard".
Select "next" the following three times.
It will then scan the desktop.
Select "Next" and then finish.
The red error light should be gone.
I suggest ignoring the red light unless it just drives you nuts. You may have to run this everytime you turn your computer and printer on. Some reason the scanner is not linking with windows and you have to introduce them everytime.
Keep the printer.
