Question about Televison & Video

An area across the top of the screen (approx 1/5th of screen height) is darker than the rest of the screen. I have a picture I can share if it would diagnose the problem.

It is a DLP and the model # is HDLP50W151.

The "shadow" across the top of the screen is the issue. In the photo it looks like it is dark blue, which is because it is a somewhat transparent gray/black band and you're seeing the blue screen through it. It is an area of the screen that is just much darker than the rest of the screen and it's there regardless of viewing mode (satellite, watching dvd, vcr, etc.).

I look forward to hearing back from you as I am eager to solve this.

    Thanks.

I will pursue that. Thank you very much for your assitance. It is greatly appreciated.

I went to the web site you suggested and could not find anything there called "optics engine" or "optics engine assembly". Do you happen to know if this is the correct way to look for the part? I can, of course, check my owner's mannual tonight to see if I can find something there but figured you might be able to clear up for me so that I might tackle the research on this before tonight.

    Thanks!!!

Seems you have a vertical scan problems, which is usually caused by bad capacitors in the vertical output section.

Hello there: Ok that tells me a lot, The problem with this unit is you mirror tunnel is defective, it is a small device located in the light tunnel that has either fell off on come loose from the mirror tunnel. It is a small black block about oh 1 1/2 inches in length with same size mirrors on either side, these mirrors are gluded on either side of this small block, the light from the lamp is reflected from the mirror and into your optics lens. The heat generated from the lamp usually causes this problem. In the past Samsung had this same problem and it was costing them to much in repairs replacing the optics engines, so they decided to train authorized service centers to replace them. Since this is a RCA model, you will probably have to replace the entire optics engine assembly. I have a website where you might be able to optain a price for the optics engine assembly.

My dlp hl-s4266w had developed a 10 " wide vertical darker area than the rest of the sceen

Usually this will be on top or either side and the problem is the optical light engine is damaged from heat----seen about a dozen.

If the line or bar is black or darker area than rest of screen it is a damaged optical light engine---caused by the intense heat from the lamp that shines into the engine.

The vertical height driver that controls the height of your picture has weakened and needs to be adjusted. If you are somewhat handy you can do this yourself. It requires that you gain access to back of the set & remove the cover. Once removed, locate the vertical height & centering adjustments. Sometimes they are located on the main board & other times are located on the color gun driver circuit board that is plugged into the end of the picture tube.

Respond to this post if you need additional assistance. Good luck!
