Question about Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 (U01E200) 200 GB Hard Drive

What does the inside of the Maxtor External Drive look like?

Does the hard drive inside my Maxtor External Hard Drive look like a regular internal Hard Drive? I am getting a Code 10 error for my Maxtor External hard drive, and I have been reading that I can remove the hard drive from the casing and then install it internally in my computer. However, I am a little uncomfortable with opening up the back of my computer and installing this hard drive in it. However, I saw a product at Best Buy called the ThermalTake Dual Bay Docking Station for most Internal SATA hard drives, where you can add 2 SATA internal hard drives to your computer externally through a USB port. And, I wanted to know if I removed my hard drive from the Maxtor External hard drive casing, would I be able to plug the hard drive into the ThermalTake Dual Bay Docking Station for most SATA Internal Hard Drives to retrieve my information? Thank you.

Hi, Each driver got its own setting, saying that your hard drive on the inside of your computer is setup to be XYZ of your reading sequence of your system, when you take it out and replace it as you mentioned it may not work as it still reading the sequence but cannot access it.
Recommendations, if you need to save your data from the external then you back up all data on the one inside your computer, then you backup all data on the external drive, now remove all covers from the external driver and do same with the internal, remember and see where is the pins locations on the front and back. Move the pins exactly on the external one to be same as the one that was internally, after that the external disk took the place of the old internal and now acting as new one. The reasons for the pins movements is it allows the OS (operating System) to know the order of the disk if it is #1 or 2 or 3 etc. and each pin location is a number.

I have the maxtor hard drive, and i want to save alot of my photos on the hard drive but NOT on the computer (but be able to access them everytime i plug in my external hard drive. please help!

The only way you can access that Hard dive on a different computer is to make it a slave.
Look at the jumpers on the rear and set it to either SL or CS (cable select)
I may have misunderstood your question because first you are saying a hard drive ( like an internal Hard drive) then you are saying external hard drive ????

Hi there i hav ea maxtor onetouch 4 mini 120 gb.

Remove the hard drive from the Maxtor case, purchase an USB hard drive adapter case, and install the hard drive inside this case. Then you can connect this to the computer's USB port and if the hard drive is OK then this computer will detect it as an external USB hard drive, then you can open the folders and files and back them up.

By SEPARATE I am taking that to mean an external drive and not an internal mounted drive. If IT IS external the same power supply should work fine as the drive motors are the same in both models. IF IT IS Internal then the question is whether your power supply is molex or ATA.

External maxtor isn't recognized on XP

Since you have important files on this drive, do not waste a lot of time with troubleshooting. If your drive is about to go out, you can put it over the edge that way and kill it.

Just to be sure, I would plug the drive into 1 other computer just to make sure. If you get the same thing, the problem is definently with the Hard Drive.

If this is the situation, I would take off the outer case to reveal the regular hard drive inside. You can hook this hard drive up to your computer as a slave and copy the files off. If your computer will not read the drive as a slave, and you have double checked the jumper settings and cable position.....you can try a program like "Get Data Back" to try and recover data off the bad/corrupted hard drive.

do you have a recovery disk for the internal hard drive? this is the disk that came with pc.your internal HD is important this have been wiped (you have no OS) . get your internal back in order........do you have a receipt that says you purchased a 300gb (not 3gb) take it back get your money or the right external... once you are able to use the pc double check the external hard drive

Maxtor 3200 was working fine. Suddenly my

Try connecting it to another computer.
If it is not detected, then either the disk-drive "inside" the unit is dead, or the "adapter" (USB-to-Disk-Drive) inside the unit is dead.

If the latter, disassemble the case, remove the disk-drive, and attach it as an "internal" hard-drive to your computer.

well, 2 options, your hard drive is not working in that case, just get a internal hard drive which is serial and open the case for the maxtor and plug the drive inside the case. its cheaper to buy the inter hard drive, then to replace the external hard drive.

i had a maxtor one touch go bad and had to open the case and take it out of the external casing and put it into my computer as an internal drive. then it worked fine. it was a single drive.

just today i had a maxtor TB drive go bad, and since i think it has two drives inside it i am very worried that i will not be able to do the same thing.
