The camera body or the lens (or both) have been damaged. You could try a different lens (if available) to determine which has failed. Either way, one or the other will likely require repair (or replacement).

The bayonet on the lens is probably broken - replace the lens mount, you can find them on Ebay and instruction videos on YouTube

Wife dropped nikon d40x on concrete...will only shoot on manual. Lens will not autofocus.

Lens motor(inside the lens) could be damaged already. The D40x focusing system is dependent on the lens, just like any other Nikon Dx camera except for the ones that has built-in motor to its body, e.g. D90, D7000. Try a different lens, most likely it should work

My Nikon d40x is roughly three years old and the lens has had to have been repaired twice due to it being dropped. Lens is working fine though now. Yesterday i was getting out my car and the camera fell...

Time for some "tough love"...suggest you buy one of the new Pentax point-and-shoots that are especially made for people who continually drop their cameras. This one can be dropped from 3 feet and still work. Leave the good DSLRs to the rest of us.

My son dropped my Nikon D40x, cracking a piece of the lens inside. It seem like a clean break; how can I fix it?

First, try it. If it still works, you're in luck. If not, well !!! Once a lens is broken, there isn't much that you can do, except replace it. Camera lenses are compound lenses, except on the smaller cameras. Compound lenses are stacked and glued sets of lenses, with specific distances between sets. If it is an expensive lens, get an estimete for a repair price. It might be cheaper to just replace it.

Lens will not auto focus wit my Nikon D40x

That lens doesn't have an internal focusing motor and thus will not autofocus with the D40x. Nothing is broken.

No autofocus

We tried the same lens on another Nikon (D90) and auto focus did not work.
We mounted a new set of lens on the original D40x, and it worked.
Turns out the 2 year Nikon lens (18mm-135mm) was bad. Nikon lens have a 5 year warrantee. The lens will be sent back to Nikon with no service or shipping charge.

Thanks,
K
