Computers do not like being dropped especially when it is powered up and running. It can do a heaps of damage.
If the hard drive in the computer makes a clicking sound and it won't boot up and/or an error message says it cannot find the hard disk or operating system, then the hard disk is damaged beyound repair.
With luck if the hard disk is only damaged then you can replace the hard drive and install Windows on the new hard drive with the device drivers and your programs. Your data on the old hard drive is gone unless you backed up your data onto CD, flash drive etc.

The same applies to the external drive. The hard drive could be faulty or the hard drive adapter case may be faulty. To test the hard drive, remove the hard drive from the case and attach it to an USB hard drive adapter and connect it to a computer's USB port.

If the compute cannot detect it as an external drive then it is definitely faulty. If the hard drive is OK then you need a new hard drive adapter case.

Refitted diesel pump to a Toyota land cruiser 1998. Car is ok on tick over, but terrible knocking when I accelerate

the problem will be the injection timing of the fuel pump. If you pulled the pump out with the drive gear attached then you are probably 1 tooth out . take the cover plate off and see where the timing mark is on the gear and match it with the mark on the fuel pump. If you have no experience in this area get assistance from a diesel pump specialist.

Most external hard drives can take a little abuse. Keep in mind that their threshold is very very little abuse, but just falling on it's side on carpet will not cause any issues. I have seen much worse.

You can try soldering it back, but it may still not work. If your soldering skills are not great, you should probably let someone who does that kind of work for a living try the repairs. Give me a call if you need to.

Try going through the initial install procedure again, but don't allow it to reformat the drive. These devices are quite fragile especially while reading or writing data, and yours' may be toast. If this is unsuccessful, there are data recovery firms that can retrieve some of the information, but are quite costly.

Maxtor Basic 500Gb hard drive - knocked and will not power up?

Hi,

They do not generally distribute spare parts for these cases. You can however purchase new complete enclosures without a drive for a small price and transfer your existing drive into the new enclosure. As the actual hard drive can generally survive several G's worth of drop force even when running, it's most likely the harddrive is ok. Once in the new enclosure test the drive out, if it works, you're done. If it doesn't the drive itself is the problem, reply here by adding a comment with your country and city and I will pass along a recommendation for a professional facility.

External hard drive fell off table now ''drive not found''

Hi,

these drives are a bit delicate and do tend to damage easily when dropped. You may just have knocked a cable loose, could have damaged the usb controller board or may have damaged the HDD.

If you're not concerned about warranty, you can slide the shell off of the body of the drive with a little prying around the back edge(around the metal end with all the plugs. It can be put back when you're done but you will likely leave some tool marks on it.

Once you have it open you will see the HDD mounted along the cases length, at one end it has two small cables attached. ensure they are snug, then follow each to it's other end and ensure they are snug, the check the small circuit board running perpendicular to the HDD to ensute the pinned end it securely attached to the larger ciruit board.

Test the drive, if no luck the next step involves buying a new drive enclosure. Go to you local computer store and ask for a 3.5" SATA Hard Drive enclosure. Then finish disassembling the Western Digital, removing the HDD and placing it in the new Enclosure, be careful not to touch the circuit board attached to the bottom of the hard drive.

Once you've installed the HDD in the new enclosure plug it into your computer and power it up. If this works your done, if not the HDD may be finished.

Still if this doesn't work you can send the HDD for recovery to a pro, try Armor-IT Data Recovery in Canada, they have good rates and are listed on FixYa's directory.

Hope this helps FixYa

Lightly Dropped Seagate 100GB External Hard Drive

Unfortunately, this probably means the read/write heads were jarred and can no longer function properly. That's usually fixable, but it's a very expensive fix because the parts are inside the hard drive and the data surfaces are very delicate... Most people are better off simply replacing the hard drive unless the data is absolutely vital.

Presario 2200 laptop "no workey"

how long did you have it on the carpet for, lalot of laptops need circulation under them , it is possible it over heated if it was for a long period of time, otherwise, check to make sure the power cord is working correctly , remove power cord and battery , then plug cord in , leave battery out of machine , then try to start it, multi generic power adapters can also cause this problem , not sure if u are using one or not ? you can also try removing the ram , which is located on the bottom of the laptop, add one stick at a time and try start it , also try starting it without the hard drive in, this will give you a indacation if the ram or hard drive is faulty and causing you this problem , laptop hard drives a very weak , sometimes it can take only a small knock to damage a laptop hard drive , mostly when it is powered on, ,
