Question about Apple 15" PowerBook G4 Aluminum 1.67 GHz LCD Display (p/n 1002587) (661-3749 1002587) Mac Notebook

1 Answer

PowerBook G4 Model A1138 (15" 1.67 Gig) I just replaced the hard drive following instructions on ifixit.com (really great site by the way for anyone wanting step by step repairs). I did it all right, but at the moment of truth... Nothing. Power's in. Green lights on. It's taking charge. But computer won't turn on. Reset PMU already. Nothing. Wondering if I fried the board with static even though I didn't feel any. I did Vacuum the inside with a brush attachment very carefully so the vac never touched, but in hindsight maybe dumb.

PowerBook G4 discs won't get snatched in discs just float freely

Yes, it sounds like the disk transport mechanism is shot.  You can try www.macsales.com for a replacement internal, but those are usually a) pricey and b) a REAL pain to install (LOTS of small parts and such) - www.ifixit.com has real nice tear-down guides for just this purpose.  Or, for lots cheaper, you could just use an external drive.  Good chance to upgrade to a faster drive/one with more features.  Go for a bus-powered one to cut down on the extra cords.

What is eating my hard drive?

Hi!

Please download this disk cleanup tool for apple. It is called OnyX. Download and install it and it will free up your space which is stuck up somewhere between.

If you find this solution helpful then do rate this solution.

Trouble with screen (powerbook G4 15" 1.67 GHz)

Well the issue isn't with the graphic card. It actually is the screen of the PB (PowerBook). I had somewhat of the same issue about 6 months ago on my 17" PB G4. But when it started to do that with mine, the screen would also make sharp vertical lines when opening and/or adjusting angle. So before my Apple Care warranty expired I had the screen fixed FREE. So, if you do have your Apple Care warranty still and not expired, I'd suggest to you to find a Apple Certified computer shop or the nearest Apple store and drop it off with the explanation to have the screen replaced. Otherwise you will have to pay a pretty penny.

And if you do not have the warranty then i suggest you not to take it to a Apple store due to the extreme cost of a new screen on an old machine. Instead goto ifixit.com. This site is great for anyone who has anything portable from Apple (including the non-portable MAC-mini) for replacement or upgrade parts, cheaper and also helps with the install (DIY instructions and pictures to go with it)

Powerbook G4 Titanium..sticking on any movement

1. Go to Support on Apple.com, search memory upgrades for your model and follow instructions for inserting the ram modules correctly. These MUST be properly seated and locked or strange intermittent bad stuff will happen.
2. At same time note make and type of memory from label, and double check that it is the correct memory from a high end maker. Macs do not like low-life sketchy memory.
3. Cables that go through the hinges are very fragile and subject to damage as well as wear and tear. Limit opening and closing display, partial or full. Titanium's have well-known hinge problems - do not let them get loose, and Google solutions if they do.
4. Find a nearby Apple store and make an appointment at the Genius Bar. It won't cost anything for a simple diagnosis or repair, and they are VERY helpful as long as you are too.
5. Parts: iFixit.com, and Google many others some with specific repair instructions on-line. I have a spare near new display cable for Titanium's, but replacing this part is extremely difficult for even most experts.
