Question about AT&T 5840 5.8GHz Speakerphone/Answering/Caller ID Answering Machine

ATT 5840 Base reset code/procedure

I have a problem with the registration of three replacement handsets (had six, 3 broke, 3 replaced). They will not register, because the base is still holding the old handset's registration codes. I know this can be solved by resetting the whole system, but unplugging it will NOT do it. I found this post, and THAT is the solution, but the instructions are horrible. Please help, I need the reset code/procedure for the base.

This is the answer for the 5830 or 5840. I searched all over and nothing worked. Finally, I found this page and was fixed in a flash. Take the batteries out of all the phones, even your existing ones (set phone number one aside so you can re-register it first). On the 5840 corded base, press Menu. Press the down arrow until you see Display Base ID and press okay. The base screen will display the 15-digit Base ID code for about 30 seconds, then return to the idle screen. Write down the Base ID code so you can enter it at the handsets after you reinstall the batteries. Unplug the base for 15 seconds and remove the backup battery if you have one installed (the only thing you will lose is your time setting).

Plug the base in. Then de-register the handsets by following the steps below:

    1. Using the soft keys on the base located below the base screen, press MENU
    2. Press the down arrow until BASE SETTINGS is highlighted.
    3. Press the OK soft key.
    4. On the base, press MUTE 3 times and FLASH twice. This will de-register the unit. I have my phones numbered to make paging easier (and easier to find a missing one!). The first phone you reinstall the battery will be phone one and so on. You will be prompted to enter the base ID number in each handset. Make sure to register each one completely before moving to the next one. Handset one may or may not register automatically. If not, register it like all the others by putting in the ID code. You may see a message that says handset rejected by base. Don't worry. Just press the "new" soft key and enter the base ID. You are now finished.

Document.write(parent.prscreen) Try this to get it working. Relocate the handset(s) closer to the main base.

Check for any lights on the base including charge, intercom, and channel lights (if applicable to the model).

Re-cradle the handset on the base for 15 seconds. Lift the handset and press PHONE.

Unplug the AC adapter from the main base unit and take out the battery from the handset. Leave it unplugged for 15 seconds. Plug the handset battery in and re-cradle the handset. Plug back the AC adapter in and wait for 15 seconds.

Try to de-register the handsets by following the steps below:

1. Using the soft keys on the base located below the base screen, press MENU
2. Press the down arrow once until BASE SETTINGS is highlighted.
3. Press the OK soft key.
4. On the base, press MUTE 3 times and FLASH twice. This will
deregister the unit.

Below are steps on how to re-register the handsets:

1. Make sure to charge the handset battery pack at least 12 hours.
2. Using the soft keys on the base located below the base screen, press MENU.
3. Use the up or down arrow keys to select DISPLAY BASE ID.
4. Press OK. The base screen will display the 15-digit Base ID
code for about 30 seconds, then the unit returns to the idle
screen. Write down the Base ID code on a piece of paper.
5. At the cordless handset, use the soft key to select NEW.
6. Enter the 15-digit Base ID code using the number keypad.
7. Use the soft key to select OK. The screen displays PLEASE
WAIT!.
8. After about 45 seconds, the screen displays FOUND BASE. If the handset displays BASE BUSY TRY LATER, the base is in
use.

Other products that use the 5.8GHz band can interfere with the use of this phone. These products or equipments include: radio towers, page towers, cellular Phones, other 5.8GHz cordless phones, intercoms, or monitors. If any of these are in the area, they may interfere with the performance of the phone. Try relocating the phone.

Video displays, Televisions or Personal Computers can cause
interference on the phone if it is plugged in electrically with one of this equipment (typically on a power strip or extension cord). Please relocate the phone to an AC outlet without any other major appliance plugged in.
You can also relocate the base to another room.

Relocate the phone out of the kitchen area. Appliances may cause interference.

If the charge light does not remain on, clean the handset and base charging contacts using a pencil eraser. If it comes on after cleaning the contacts, you may need to charge the unit for 10 hours.

Make sure that the AC power cord is securely plugged into the base. If unsuccessful, plug the unit into a different known working outlet or turn on the switch on the power strip.

Thanks!  You solved my problem!  I have the 5840 base with 4 handsets and bought two new handsets that wouldn't register until I reset the whole system as below. Then I re-registered each of the six handsets without a problem.  My setup is for an 84 year old man so he can reach a phone quickly wherever he is in the house.  Thanks again!

Walter's tip worked for me as well. The answering machine messages are still there but the answering machine clock reset back to Monday, 1:30am. (it is wed, 7:30pm). That was easy to adjust, though and now my new handset is working. The handsets had to be reprogrammed individually with the 15 digit base ID code, but that just took a minute as well.

Does anyone know if using the procedure noted resets everything including clock, erases messages etc. Or does it just reset the base id
Thanks

DS6321 out of range, no power at base

This sounds like a registration problem, the handset(s)
and the base have lost identification with each other.

I. To address this, first de-register the handset(s) ---
do this procedure for each handset:

0. Start by taking off the battery compartment cover....

1. press [menu]
2. scroll up/down to "Settings"
3. enter * 7 8 9 0 #
4. scroll down to "next page", press [select]
5. scroll down to "Register Clear?", press [select]
6. display asks "Confirm?" or "Register Clear??", press [select]
7. display reads "Ok" and chirps, press [ off ]

8. UNPLUG THE HANDSET BATTERY (why the cover was off)

9. Wait ~30 seconds, re-connect the battery & replace the cover

10. display reads "Not Registered" ===============================

II. To register the handset to the base:

1. press [Find Handset] on the base and hold for
~4 sec until the "In Use" lamp lights.
2. press # on the handset and set the handset into
the handset cradle on the base
3. within 30 seconds or so, the handset will either
chirp and display "Handset Registered", then
"Handset #1" or it will say "Registration Failed".

NOTE: the battery must be well charged prior to the
registration process, a weak battery may cause a
"Registration Failed". Charge the battery for a few
hours and try the registration ( II ) again.

NOTE: the base can only handle 5 handsets and will
increment the number of each handset registered
until "Handset #5" has appeared, even if some of
the handsets are lost/not in use. Trying to register
more than 5 handsets will result in "Registration Failed."
===============================

III. To clear the base of all handset registrations and
be able to start registering again at Handset #1:

1. press [Find Handset] on the base and hold past ~4 sec when the "In Use" lamp lights, at
about 10 secs the "In Use" lamp will begin to
blink.
2. release the [Find Handset] button momentarily,
then briefly press it again. After a moment,
all handsets that were registered to the base
(if any) will display "Not Registered" and be
ready for fresh registration
3. for multiple handsets, return to II. above and
register each handset in turn.

This sounds like a registration problem, the
handset must be de-registered from wherever
it thinks it is and then registered to your base.

=====================================
( I ). First, to de-register a cs6114 handset ---

4. scroll from "Test Base" to "Test Handset", press [select]

lamp indicator. To register the handset simply park it
displaying "Not Registered" in the base cradle and wait
for the registration to occur. Pressing # as above may
be required, maybe not.

My phone says no link to base but I am right beside it.

Sounds like the antenna on the base station is not receiving, or the cordless handset is not transmitting -OR- the sets have never been registered to the base station (please look up registering to base station, if the set has never been registered)

Did the cordless set work before?

The base station or the handset may just have a hick up, I would un-plug the base station and leave it un-plugged... now get all the cordless set(s), and take out the batteries from the cordless set(s). Wait for about 15 seconds for all the power to drain out of the sets, then re-install the batteries.

Once all the cordless sets are back up and working, plug in the base station and wait for about 1 minute.
This forces the base station to re-establish and link between the base station and the cordless sets.

Good luck
