Question about Pioneer PRO-520HD 53" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Our Pioneer Elite Pro-520HD turns off by itself.

We bought it new 7 years ago. Very inconsistantly goes "pop" and turns off. Green light in front turns red. The only way we get it back on is if we unplug the power cord from the electrical recepatacle waiting for a random period of minutes then plug it back in and it sometimes turns on but not always. Right now we can't turn it on at all.
We have the Verizon Expert Care Warranty. They have sent out 6 TV Technicians and none of them have found the problem. Now they want to take the TV to their "shop" so they can observe it. Verizon Expert Care has refused to send out a "qualified and certified Pioneer" Technician. Verizon is awlful to deal with! I have paid $75.00 per the warranty to get the TV fixed or they have to replace it. Plus the $9.95 per month to have the warranty. Not to mention hours on the phone and at home waiting for the Technicians to show up. I love the TV and prefer to have it fixed. Verizon has refused to send any more technicians out and are insisting I allow them to take the TV to their "shop". Obviously it is a power problem somewhere and there must be someone out there that can tell me what the problem is.
Please help me!

These intermittent failures are hard to find. The "pop" noise you're earing might be cause by a coolant moisture near the high voltage connection, sometimes the coolant might leak onto the CRT causing the high voltage to arc creating a conductive pattern for the high voltage to discharge and that will also cause the TV to shutdown.
Let me know if you require further assistance.

The most common issue on this model is the power board develops all kinds of bad solder connections--have to remove and in most cases hand solder the entire board.

Dim/dark Picture

The model indicated here is rear projection that uses three picture tubes.

If rear cover is removed--can be done by removing entire front screen but there are hazards like damaging the screen---with rear cover removed clean the lens in the three round cyclinders which point up and are hard to miss===

They are the light source for the picture---there is if you look up inside and to the rear a mirror but unless grimy it rarely needs cleaning.

clean the lens with a lens cloth or even a paper towel with glass cleaner sprayed on the towel.

Pioneer 520-hd keeps popping then turning off

I had this problem and called Tweeter for service. A service tech came out and he knew exactly how to fix it. He removed the power supply board, sat in the middle of the living room floor and proceeded to re-solder the back of the board. This guy was phenomenal. That was a couple years ago and I haven't had a problem since.

Pioneer Elite PRO-520HD POPS the SHUTS OFF

It could be a couple of things doing it. The lead on the CRT , The Flyback and or splitter are just a few of the things that come to mind. be careful as thats high vorage and a arching CRT or Flyback lead can be very dangerous . It is usually best to callm in a professional for those kind of repairs and diagnosis unless your a skilled technician , let a repair shop handle the problem and be safe.

Pioneer Elite PRO-520HD wont stay on

It is most likely just solder connections on your power supply. If the only diag LED that lights is on the supply, then thats usually the case. You can unplug the set and remove the supply to fix it with a little soldering. You have to remove the metal board supporter from the bottom of the board and solder quite a few connections. Look for cracked connections on the power connectors to the rest of the set, and also connections on the main transformer. If you need soldering experience, get a kit at radio shack and build a little project to get some practice.

Pioneer Elite Pro-200

When it shuts itself down it is for the protection of the unit from further damage. It appears there may be something wrong with the power supply of unit. If you can get an inexpensive replacement board you just might want to go that route. On the other hand you have already gotten ten years out of it and you might want to move on.
