I too cannot print using black ink cartridge. Someone help..plz
My printer was disconnected and when I reconnected it and tried to print, some box came up about print options and I guess I chose the wrong answer (yes or no?) but now my black and white print option box is closed. I can no longer select it and can no longer print from my black cartridge, only my color. Does anyone know how I can get this button back and stop wasting my color ink? (Please help.)

error 1203's error name is print head short which indicates a short circuit in the print head has occurred.
solution to this problem is to disconnect and then reconnect the printer power cable. Reinstall the ink
cartridges. For more information, see Replacing Ink Cartridges.
Replacing Ink Cartridges
Turn on your printer.
Lift the printer unit, and then position the scanner support
between the tabs to hold it open.
The ink cartridge carrier moves and stops at the loading position unless the
printer is busy.
Press down on the ink cartridge lever to raise each ink
Remove the old ink cartridges.
Store the cartridges in an air-tight container, such as the
storage unit you received with your photo cartridge, or dispose of them
If you are installing new ink cartridges, remove the sticker
and transparent tape from the back and bottom of each ink cartridge. NOTE: The following illustration shows a black cartridge and a
color cartridge (used for normal printing). For photo printing, use a photo
cartridge and a color cartridge.
Insert the new ink cartridges. Make sure the black or photo ink cartridge is
secure in the left ink cartridge carrier, and the color ink cartridge is secure
in the right ink cartridge carrier.
Snap each lid closed.
Hold the printer unit up, push the scanner support back to unlock it, and then
lower the printer unit until it is completely closed.

If not working, try to clean the ink head manual by removing the cartridge and rub the ink head to a plain paper with alcohol until ink flows on the cartridges and then run the print nozzle or print alignment page.

When the ink cartridges were installed there is a possiblity that you have not used the procedure to replace the ink.
hence there is a chance that the software is having a conflict.
Disconnect the printer and uninstall and then reinstall the software of the printer. Then reconnect the printer to the PC .The hardware will be detected and installed. Now make a head cleaning and do the test print.
If this wont help, it is possible that the printer's head is faulty.
Hope my advice helps.
There are two ways to make your cartridge work again.
The first one will be basic....turn on the printer...remove the black cartridge from the printer.. using a moisten cloth, clean gently the contact terminal of the cartridge..after letting it air dry for a couple of seconds return the cartridge.. then try printing again..
The second one is to reset the ink cartridge.. how?
1. While your printer is on.. disconnect the usb cable from the back of your printer. 2. Remove the cartridges. 3. Wait until the message "Insert Cartridge" display on the control panel. 4. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer. 5. Wait for 60 seconds. 6. Plug the power cord at the back of the printer...If printer does not automatically on..press the "Power" button. 7. Reinsert the cartridge and close any open doors of the printer. 8. If prompted to Calibrate, do so.. 9. Reconnect the usb at back of the printer...and try printing again..
After that you can print easily.

try printing in monochrome mode or gray-scale mode, and specify that it use only the black cartridge.
another problem could be that the head have gotten dry, remove the cartridge, get a soft cotton towel, wet it with a little bit of water, put the head of the cartridge (where the ink comes out from) on the cotton towel, you will see some ink come out of the cartridge, if yes, then put the cartridge back into the printer, and give it a try.
if not try to blow some air into the cartridge as if doing CPR ;) to the cartridge, this will help the ink get out of the cartridge.
if all this fails, get a new cartridge, as sometimes the head could have gotten damaged.
I've used HP Inkjet/Officejet printers for years. Many HP inkjet printers also use the color cartridges to some extent to create 'black' in slightly different shades, that can be un-noticeable to the eye.
To print using only black ink, try doing as follows:
When you click on 'Print' from your browser, the printer properties (or preferences) page opens.
You must first set the printer to not print in color (color is the default setting). Then you must set the printer to use 'black ink only' by using the 'advanced settings' as follows:
1. In most browsers there will be a box on the lower right of the printer properties page that says 'advanced'.
2. Click on that box to get the advanced settings page to open.
3. Once open, the feature you need to check is called 'print in grayscale'. (It is usually at the top of the list) It is set to 'off' by default. Just click on it and a menu box drops down and one of the choices is 'Black Ink Only'.
4. Click on that and then 'save' or 'apply' those settings.
Then your printer should be using black ink only.
You will probably have to set that each time you want to start a new printing job, as the default settings on these printers are tilted toward using the color cartridges in order to sell you more colored ink.
Also, if you are using Windows 10 and the 'Edge Browser' that comes with it, you cannot get to the 'grayscale' option. So either use a 3rd party browser, or use good old Internet Explorer, (which is still included in Windows 10) to open and get to the page you are trying to print.
I hope this helps. If not, go to HP.com and type in the model number of your printer and then do a search from there for detailed instructions for your printer model (which might be slightly different than what I have shared here.
