Question about SpeakerCraft BB1235 12-Channel Amplifier

1 Answer

My SpeakerCraft BB1235 was the only device in my house that stopped working after an electrical storm. I checked the fuse in the back, but it is not blown. I also opened the case, but there was nothing burned or melted that I could see inside. I am very competent with electronics, but I don't know what to test or how to test it for damage or if there is a common failpoint that might be worth just replacing. Any advice would be great! I need to get my sound going and can't afford to buy another one of these things!

I can't really say what failed in your unit, but as far as electrical storms go, it could be just about anything, so i can only suggest some possibilities:

- ANY of the components sensitive to static electricity (fet transistors, cmos ICs) may have recieved a fatal voltage spike

- in general, ALL of the semiconductors are to be regarded as sensitive to static electricity even if some of them may be able to sustain quite some spiking, so bipolar transistors, diodes or diode bridges, voltage regulators, optocouplers and ICs of any kind are also on the list of possible fatalities.

- other components that may have been damaged are the low voltage capacitors, sometimes they will blow up, sometimes there will be a very tiny crack or a burn spot which is very difficult to notice, and sometimes it will be only internal damage so it is impossible to track it down without measuring or scoping the circuit

- it is ok to check for any internal fuses (standard type, auto recover type or semiconductor type) and see if they are ok

- also see if there are protection varistors near the main power input and check them out, sometimes they may fail

Hope it turns out to be some minor damage.

I have a Merlin 230T garage door opener which abruptly stopped working altogether. Could it be the fuse?--or any other suggestions.

There is a fuse in a Model M-230T and I have seen a service man change it.Now that the fuse has blown again, I want to change it myself BUT can't now find it!

Can anyone please offer a guide to changing the fuse?

Our SpeakerCraft BB835 won't power up. Could this be as simple as a blown fuse?

this could be a fuse, check for other fuses on the board.
Also check the power transistors using a multimeter..

Durning an electrical storm the ups shu toof and now does not work is there a switch or fuse that needs to be replaced vern

No electronic equipment should be uswd during electrical storms. There is always a fuse at the back of the device. Unscrew it and check the glass viol for a broken wire inside. If yes, then replace it with the same specification viol. If not then the damage is serious and needs professional help.

Crackling and popping sounds in surround sound speakers

Could be your head unit or the connection to the speaker may be bad. Also if the wire to the speakers in your ceiling is bare and touching any ground it would interfere. Start by checking connections by playing something and messing with wires. Listen for a difference. Next check by putting the wires that power those speakers in a known working output and listen for different quality

I don't know but seems to me that electrical storm did not cause this, a car is a pretty protected environment (also for the electrical equipment) for such stuff, unless you had a direct lightning hit.
I presume that a hit will be very noticable and I always heard that cars are very seldom struck and therefor are a very save place in that respect.
If it is caused by the electrical storm , I would try to disconnect the battery for a period of time and try again before replacing computer and such.(check fuses to rule everything out)
