Question about Gateway MT3705 Notebook

No lights, no signs of power, no warning

I have the same issue with my "new" laptop. It was my dad's and he bought it new. I was using it and it died. No lights, no fan, no signs of power or life. Took it to the tech dept at work and we confirmed the power cord has power, the jack in the computer is taking power.

Not sure what specs you need:
Gateway
Model No: MA7
Modem Model Motorola ML3080
White Sticker says:
MODEL:MT6705
(upc lines)
PIN 1MA7A000054
(upc lines)
GWTF1008QQ

Windows Vista Home edition. I had it running for about an hour or so? No hiccups at all. Just finished installing the latest Microsoft updates successfully. Just cleaned up the programs and files that were on there. The computer use was not heavy throughout it's life - my dad is an average to below average usage user, yet technically inclined. I'm very confident no virus or malicious software installs.
I took the battery out, had it plugged in and attempted to do the power flush start...no luck. I can't seem to find the reset - if there is one (Gateway support has a picture but it doesn't match this computer, or well I couldn't find it.)

I have limited hardware repair experience (a beginner elective class back in college years ago) although I am a developer and very comfortable cracking it open.
I am almost positive it's the power IN the computer, after the DC input. I am not familar with the correct terminology of the parts, so please be descriptive.
Thank you so much in advance for any advice direction to take this.

Tried that, nothing happened. I am hesitant to conclude it's a motherboard issue. Is there any steps I can take to determine if the motherboard is bad?

Well, if you kept the AC power adapter connected when you tried to do the "power flush" then you did it wrong. :) No offense, but you can't have power connected when you're trying to flush the power from the capacitors.

Disconnect AC power and battery. Then press the power button down for about 3 seconds, 10 or 12 times. Then reconnect AC power and try powering up.

Ultimately, it appears to be a motherboard issue. This is not unusual for a laptop that is several years old, no matter how well you maintained it. There also might be a short that has developed somewhere internally, sometimes the protective shielding between the layers of electronics moves. I have a x31 Thinkpad that I had to completely disassemble and reassemble to solve this same problem. Thankfully, it wasn't a mobo problem, just a shield that needed to be moved back into place.

Did you charge it properly? Was the battery sign overlooked? If no such case is there, call authorized service center.

I see two possible problems. First, with a magnetic antenna it is difficult to get the proper ground for the antenna. Make sure the magnetic base is clean as well as where you place it. Second, try running your power lead DIRECTLY to the battery and not using the cigarette lighter. Hope it helps.

Power adapter issues...

If you can jiggle the the power cord right at where it plugs into the computer and sometimes the green light comes on, that means your DC Power Jack is bad. There was probably nothing wrong with your other power cord. When the DC Power Jack is bad the laptop will not power on if the battery is drained of all of it's power because the Power Cord can't charge the battery.

Take an ink pen and push the tip inside the jack and see if the little pin wiggles, if so the jack is bad. You'll have to take the laptop apart to fix it. Most times it is soldered onto the motherboard, so you will have to desolder the old and solder a new one.

My dell inspiron 6400 no power at all

If your battery is charging, then i guess it is suffering from Dells Graphics card known issue. Basically the graphics card stops working which also wont let your laptop boot up. A tell tale sign of this being the problem is when you press the power button on your laptop, the power light will flash on for a second then die.... hope this helps...

Dell 9400 wont show AC power icon

If the computer is connected to an electrical outlet, the about10.jpg light operates as follows:
  • Solid green: The battery is charging.

  • Flashing green: The battery is almost fully charged.

If the computer is running on a battery, the about41.jpg light operates as follows:
  • Off: The battery is adequately charged (or the computer is turned off).

  • Flashing orange: The battery charge is low.

  • Solid orange: The battery charge is critically low.
Looks like the AC adaptor is faulty.
