Your battery contacts need cleaning. This is easily accomplished using a Q-Tip dampened in rubbing alcohol. Clean the contacts in the compartment as well as on the battery and the charger. This should eliminate any further problems. Thank you, Dana

Hi Matt. Turn the camera on and go into menu. Find reset. Reset the camera which will take it back to the original factory settings. Then take a few shots and see if the problem is solved. It most likely will be. If not, you will have to send it in for a tuneup. J.

Camera consistently says "battery empty"....will not hold for more than a few minutes...yes I have tried new batteries!

The above is service and repair information for your camera.

Even, the manual says that you can use alkaline, NiMH, or Oxyride batteries. which are generally 1.25V for each AA, try the Lithium batteries which are 1.5V. They might work in your camera if your camera has some characteristic where the voltage falls below a certain limit and the 'battery empty' message shows up.

They are more expensive, but might solve your problem, even though the manual says that Lithium batteries are not to be used (in a new properly functioning camera)

My camera Access and then say turn the power off and on again

Camera needs to be serviced. The camera got dirt in it and needs to be taken apart and cleaned. This should be done by someone with knowledge of cameras because they consist of many parts inside.

Nikon S1 memory problem

Just so you know, I have this problem also. Anyway, the only thing that works for me is to turn the camera on WITHOUT the card inserted, then insert the card. After this, it will let me take ONE photo, video, or noise clip before it gives me the error again (strangely enough, I just figured out this solution a couple hours ago as I was browsing a listing for a similarly infected camera on eBay).
For a permanent fix, the "cheap camera repair man" can repair both the menus and the error for 55 bucks on his website (DynamicCamera.com).

Consistent under exposure

Under exposed should be minus not plus number.
Lucky you didn't buy Canon 5D or 1D- they have focus and exposure problems.

Hope you are not using the pop flash that is on the camera. If you are, then turn off the Red Eyes Modes.
Set camera to manual mode and lower the F number(open up to half or one stop).

What studio lights are you using? Increased the light output of studio by those number and shoot like you normally do.

Camera turns off

1. Try the camera with a different CF card. 2. Try the camera with a different battery. Defective components don't always fail in expected ways. The battery might have enough power to "sometimes" operate some functions but not consistently. The CF card may be malfunctioning is some way that draws too much power from the camera & at times causes it to "lock-up" or shut down. If you don't have another battery or CF to try, you may be able to bring your camera into a camera store where they may have & let you try 1 of each on your camera to see if it fixes the problem. They may do this in the hopes of selling you either a new battery, CF or camera depending on which proves defective.
