Question about GE GSS25WSTSS 25.4 Cu. Ft. Side-by-Side Refrigerator with External Controls and Dispenser

1 Answer

Ice dispenser doesn't work

The ice dispenser in our fridge doesn't work. It is less than two years old and I have tried replacing a part with no success. The motor that turns the auger appears to be stripped as the part spins freely. It doesn't stay tight on the threaded piece from the motor. Any ideas on how to repair without calling serviceman?

You need to replace the motor and the " U " piece that screws onto the motor . You may have to saw the motor shaft , to remove the motor , if the U piece will not screw off . Remove the panel which holds the motor ( 4 screws ) and disconnect the plug , and the whole panel should come out .

When we get ice it flies all over the floor and makes a mess, is there a fix or do i need to return it

Hi.

The ice dispenser is defective. First check if there is ice blocking dispenser door or mechanism. That may prevent the ice-maker from stopping or may cause the ice dropping on the floor. In case try removing food and defrosting the unit completely (leave it off for 24 hours), or use an hairdryer on Cold settings to defrost manually ice from dispenser and icemaker.

If that does not work, then the appliance must be repaired. That does not mean that the fridge will be returned. The manufacturer will send you a technician to replace ice dispenser at home. If the unit is less than two years old the repair will be carried free of charge under warranty conditions.

Here all the parts and diagrams for this unit: RS2630SH/XAA.

ICE MAKER QUIT MAKING ICE ON MY WHIRLPOOL FRIDGE

I had a Whirlpool Model GD5SHAXNS in which the icemaker quit working about the same time (3 years old). I had water out the dispenser, I found that it was the icemaker itself failed not calling for water to fill it. I replaced it with a icemaker on-line for about $100 and problem fixed. I have been told his is a common problem with the icemaker in this model ref.

Ice maker has quit making ice

Lower the freezer temp. The icemaker won't come on until the temp is low enough.

Ice maker not working

Hello bnelson488,

Since the ice maker is erationally starting and stopping at it's own leisure.

1.We must first try to turn off the fridge.

2.unplug it or if you can not reach the plug you can turn off the breaker to the fridge also, for 5 minutes!
After this you restart the fridge and see if the system reset it self.
This is a common way to reset some units!

If nothing works then perhaps the ice maker needs to be replaced.

How old the fridge?
Let me know how it works and if you have any questions.

Please remember to give a rating before you finish..
bless you
Huuum.

Here is an interesting article I just read.

Repair or replace?

When to pull the plug on your old refrigerator

It nearly always makes sense to undertake simple do-it-yourself repairs,
such as replacing a gasket on a refrigerator or a freezer.

Typically, you'll also find a troubleshooting section for more-serious problems
in the owner's manual.

Should you pay for a repair or buy a new model?
The answer depends mostly on the age of your refrigerator,
how much you bought it for,and the cost of the repair.

Follow these guidelines:

When a repair makes sense.

If your refrigerator is under warranty or less than four years old (three years for top-freezers),
paying for a repair makes sense.
Note that refrigerators under warranty might require service from a factory-authorized technician;
readers have found them on a par with independent repairers.

When a repair might be a wise choice.

If your refrigerator is out of warranty and is four to seven years old,
it might make sense to pay for a repair. Customers generally pay $100 to $200 for a repair.
But you might want to buy a new model even at this stage,
given that today's models are quieter and have added features.
Higher energy efficiency is another plus: Energy Star-qualified models made after April 28, 2008,
are 43 percent more efficient than conventional models built before 2001 and 56 percent
more efficient than those built before 1993.

When it pays to replace.

The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new refrigerator.
Data also shows that it doesn't pay to fix a less-expensive top-freezer refrigerator
six or more years old or a bottom-freezer or side-by-side eight or more years old.

Thanks to better recycling programs, less than 10 percent
of a refrigerator you replace is likely to end up in a landfill.
