My PTH5498 all of a sudden, showed a red ghost or shadow on the faces and letters on the screen. There was also some concave bowing toward the center of the screen by the ghosts. Is this the same convergence amps (stk392-040) at izc103/104 problem I've read about? I called a repair man and he is coming out tomorrow. He quoted an $85 service call which would be applied to the cost of repair if I choose to go ahead with repair (he estimated $170 to $300 for repair). Is there something I should first check with my remote ( a code mute 183 ) or just go ahead??? I am not familiar with this lingo.
The STKs are common and if you have an experienced electronics tech
around they can replace them for much less money but the tech must have
advanced soldering and IC exchange experience.
The STK ics, two of them, can be purchased on line for around $20 to $40 each.
Partstore has two models available - one for around $40 and another for around $55.
The part number is STK392-110 and if you google you can find them for
as little as $6/each but I don't recommend the cheap ones as they are
not reliable.
It takes a good tech around 3 or 3 hours to take the old ones out and
solder in the new ones. Also, it is likely one or two resistors are
burnt and will need replacing as well. ·http://home.earthlink.net/~oleg.filippov/ConvergenceFix.htm ·http://cmpalmer.blogspot.com/2006/11/fixing-my-own-tv-part-ii.html

HI, this is a failed convergence chip that is located on the convergence board. it will need to be replace ASAP. you can just replace the chip or , you can order a new board.
Replacing the chip can be a rough job if you don't have tech experience. if you are a fluid tech and you can solder and know your way around a circuit board, just replacing the chip will cost less. if you are not an experienced TV tech, i recommend a service call to the nearest TV tech to replace the convergence board.
you can get the KP46WT510 convergence repair kit at the following link under convergence repair kits category which will also work for your model. http://servicemanuals.vstore.ca/
I have red concave lines going across the screen, plus wording appears double like a ghosting effect, this is ongoing from the time the tv is turned on until it is turned off. This started 3 days ago. Is it time for a new tv, its 9 or 10 yrs old now.
It seems your TV Samsung HCM4215W has problem in convergence board and need to be replaced. You can get that board from Parts Store on $76 If you have bit electronics knowledge and know how about tv repair, you can replace it by yourself or get help of local tv tech person.
Go into your service menu and try to adjust the convergence, if it does not adjust, the IC's ( chips) are bad in that circuit. Call a local factory authorized dealer to service your tv. The cost should run around $450.00. Good luck.
