The computer shows that there is power to it; however, the screen is blank and the capslock, numberlock, speaker mute and other lights are constantly on. I tried to hook up a monitor to it but it hasn't worked. I have a number of pictures on it and some files that are important.
How can this be fixed? or how can I at least get the information off it before I punt it into the front lawn. This computer has been nothing but problems (faulty power switch, poor battery, loose power wire...garbage)

THis is a problem of the invertor board. If you are technically able you need to disasseble the monitor and resolder components around the red or yellow inverter transformers.

hey i just fixed that.. except i broke one very IMPORTANT metal part i think i fixed it with epoxi solder.
here it is
http://forum.tabletpcreview.com/showthread.php?t=19209
but that guy just tighten the 4 screws.. youll si if those are loose.. but mine werent. youll have to take those screws, and then
take that little part off (just pull. if its loose, will come off really easy) then put some tape, or paper to make it tight, and hammer it back on
and youll be set. you can make it softer (the friction) by loosing the screw nut on both sides.
when i broke mine, was when i was pulling up the beezel the part with the HP logo. the speakers were hard, really hard, but that hp last part was REALLY HARD.. well and it broke.. the left little metal part.
think ive done something wrong. i hope doesnt happen to you.
my english isnt good either.. my first languaje is spanish.
good luck!

The troubleshooting you have done seems to be fine. It does not seem to be a problem with the power supply, cord or battery.Did you try a hard reset. If there is a reset button on the bottom of your laptop, you might want to try pressing that with laptop plugged in, not plugged in, with battery, without battery and different combinations thereof.
If this does not work or you don't have a reset button read on.
Before assuming it's the motherboard, there is one other possibility. There is a part called a PCA switch. It is possible this switch has gone bad or a plug might have come loose.
If you are comfortable with doing your own work, you can obtain a repair manual for your laptop online. Within this manual, it should explain what is involved in replacing this part. It is really not too complicated.
It does not sound like a hard drive problem simply because it doesn't seem to be getting power to any other part of the laptop.
You can try these steps.
