USB power connector missing

Ok a friend asked me to beef up an older computer. the computer was made by v2premier. the motherboard is a p4vmm rev 1.0. the issue that i am having is that though everything appears to be connected correctly and the computer boots up no problem there is no power to the usb ports (both back and front. now the reason i am having an issue is because for the usb ports i have not changed anything nor did i touch the wires. the four pin connector that is supposed to plug into the mobo for the usb to give them power has no mate on the mobo that i am able to find. any suggestions at all would be greatly appreciated. i have been searching for a schematic or diagram of the actual mobo to no avail.

    the thing is the only connector that i can find on the power supply is the four pin square. which requires a bigger plug to be on the mobo. i think that it is most commonly referred to as atx1 while the bigger of the two that plug into the mobo is called atx2

The USB connections are in groups of 4 and 5 pins in parallel, with one pin missing at one end. The connector goes on, with its first pin(normally red) at the end that has both pins.

A) Let's start with the two power cables coming from the Power Supply, that go to the motherboard;

1) 24-pin ATX main power cable

Looking at the motherboard photo, the 24-pin ATX main power cable's connector; is at the bottom.
Two rows of 12 socket holes, in a yellowish/whitish connector.

Motherboard installed in computer case, you will find it to the Right.

(The motherboard view shown, is clocked 90 degrees to the Right; in comparison to how it actually sits in the computer case)

[NOTE* Color of connector does NOT matter ]

Note the hinged Lock Clip on the power cable's connector.
Also the TAB on the motherboard connector.
When power cable is deemed to be plugged in tightly, and properly; the Lock Clip will be over the Tab.

{Lock Clip operates on the same principle, as a see-saw on a playground. Top is squeezed in to release Lock Clip}

2) 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable

Looking at the motherboard photo, the motherboard connector for this power cable is;
Straight up from the white Processor socket,
To the right of the square finned Aluminum Heatsink.

General example of said power cable, and it's respective connector on the motherboard,

Has a Lock Clip too.
Remember about the color of connector, thing.
Can be pink with neon polka dots. Doesn't matter.
WHAT the power cable IS, does matter.

This power cable is power for the Processor.
It ain't plugged in, you have no computer.

(Scroll down to Motherboard Layout. It is PU521 )

That's it for power cables that plug into the motherboard.
Moving on..........

The Harddrive is a SATA unit. The optical drive is a SATA unit.
(CD/DVD drive)
Means you need a SATA power cable for each one of them.
General example,

Note the L-shaped opening in the connector. Hard to see in this photo, but I will show a better view in a minute.

Also; between a SATA data cable's connector, and a SATA power cable's connector; the SATA power cable connector is the larger of the two.
Has 15 contact pins.
SATA data cable connector has 7-pins.

Often there is a lock on this power cable's connector.
A tab that sticks up, or a 'bulb' type affair.
Depress with thumb, when plugging in, or unplugging.

Harddrive needs a power cable, and data cable.
So does optical drive/s.

B) General example of a SATA data cable, and it's respective connector,

Just referring to the cable shown at the top, for now.
Now you can see the L-shaped opening a little better.
See how the 'foot' of the L goes down? That is the direction you want it, when plugging in.

The motherboard connector shown below the SATA data cable, is a SATA connector.
This particular style is OPEN.
Your motherboard uses the type that is CLOSED.
Note also the L shape on the motherboard connector.

The connector shown for that SATA data cable, is a 90 degree bent elbow.
If your SATA data cables have this style of connector, they plug into the Harddrive, and optical drive/s.

The straight type of connector, plugs into the motherboard.
It can also plug into the Harddrive, and optical drive; if your SATA data cable has two straight connectors.

The SATA data cable connectors on your motherboard, are all the way to the Left. (In the motherboard photo)

Orange, Light Blue, Dark Blue, and White.
Note that they have a L shape in the middle.

Now scroll down the HP Support page, to Motherboard Layout.

Orange = SATA4
Dark Blue = SATA1
Light Blue = SATA3
White = SATA2

SATA1 is for the Harddrive
SATA2 is for an optical drive.
If you have more than 1 optical drive, it plugs into SATA3.

(Make sure SATA3 is ENABLED in BIOS Setup)

C) The front of your computer is the Front Panel.

The area of contact pins on the motherboard, that the Main wires from the Front Panel go to; is the Front Panel header.

Looking at the motherboard photo, look again at the Orange SATA4 connector. To the Immediate RIGHT is the Front Panel header,

I believe though, that the cable coming from the Front Panel; has one solid plug-on connector. Not individual wires.

Note how the Front Panel header on the motherboard, is missing one pin. This is the Key.
The cable connector going to it, should have one socket hole blocked off.

Should only be one cable coming from the Front Panel, that has the correct plug-on connector.
The other cables coming from the Front Panel, will have different size plug-on connectors.

Going further.........
Look at what is installed in the Front Panel;

USB ports, audio ports, (Headphone and Microphone), Card Reader, etc.
You can follow the cables, and get a pretty good idea of where they go, in the Front Panel.

For example you can follow the cables that go to the USB ports.
Follow the two cables that go to the Card Reader.
Follow the cables that go to Microphone, and Headphone jacks.

Then by process of elimination, you know which cable goes to the Front Panel header.

D) Front Audio
Looking at the motherboard photo, look towards the Top/Left corner.
The Yellow header is for the Front Panel audio ports.
Headphone, and Microphone.

E) Coming down the Left side, in the motherboard photo; look at the two White rectangular headers.
Match up in the Motherboard Layout, and bottom of HP Support page.

USB1 2, and USB1 2.

EACH USB header, is for TWO USB ports.

That is why they both have USB1 2 marked near them, in Motherboard Layout.

A Card Reader SHOULD use two cables, and One USB header.
It may be though, that the Card Reader will use both of those White USB headers.

Either the Card Reader plugs into them, or the USB ports in the Front Panel.
If the cable connector fits, plug that cable in. (On)

USB is USB.
Card Reader uses USB too.

Point?
If the cable's connector fits, plug it in. (On)

In the motherboard photo, there are two White connectors;
Above the Orange SATA4 connector, and Below the Light Blue, and White SATA connectors.
(Light Blue = SATA3, White = SATA2)

The USB ports up front probably connect to them. (Front Panel)
Follow the cables to Front Panel USB ports.
What type of connector do the cables use?

All FOUR of those USB connectors on the motherboard, may NOT be used.
Perhaps just two of them.

That doesn't 'sound' very concise, huh?
However it is my contention, that each cable coming from the Front Panel; should have a different connector.

Going further;
The Card Reader, and the USB ports in the Front Panel; may have the SAME type of connector, on the end of their cables.

Again, the Card Reader uses a USB header, (Or headers), on the motherboard.
So do the two USB ports in the Front Panel.

Therefore it does not matter which USB header on the motherboard, that either one of them are connected to.

F) Looking at the motherboard photo, look above the Ram Memory slots, to the far Right.

Right above ram memory Slot 1, that is White in color. (DIMM 1)
There is a small Electrolytic Capacitor, with a Black plastic sleeve.
Right above it is a small White 3-pin connector.

This is where the Processor fan plugs in.
(CPU_FAN)

G) Right above the square Aluminum finned Heatsink, is the 3-pin connector for the computer case fan.
SYS_FAN
(System Fan)

(The square Aluminum finned Heatsink, sits on the Northbridge chip.
Which is part of the motherboard chipset)

B - Processor Core Power Connector
That is to the LEFT of the processor socket.

This is a general example of a 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable, and it's respective connector on the motherboard,

Note the LOCK clip on the power cable's connector, and the matching TAB, on the motherboard connector.
When the power cable is deemed to be plugged in Tightly, and Correctly; the Lock clip will be hooked over the Tab.

The 24-pin ATX main power cable's connector, and matching motherboard connector; has this feature also.

D - CPU Fan Connector
Go straight up, from the processor socket to the edge of the motherboard, then to the Right.

Notice how the motherboard connector is Keyed, and the matching plug connector that goes to it.
Same thing for all those white 3-pin connectors, on the motherboard.

[CPU = Central Processing Unit. Another term used is Microprocessor, or simply Processor for short.
Does NOT mean Personal Computer ]

G - Floppy Disk Drive Connector
Black 34-pin connector for a Floppy Drive.
It is next to the White 24-pin ATX main power cable connector.
Right side of motherboard, towards the Top.

If I were a betting man, I would bet you aren't using it. No Floppy Disk Drive.
But I'll tell you what.........it's nice to have.
A Floppy Disk Drive doesn't take squat to run.

Need to flash the BIOS after the BIOS has been corrupted, you can use a Floppy Disk/s with the BIOS upgrade info on it.
Jus sayin'.

H - ATX Power Connector = 24-pin ATX main power cable connector.
This is a general example of a 24-pin ATX power cable, and it's respective connector on the motherboard,

I - Rear Chassis Fan Connector

With the huge(?) image of the motherboard on Gateway Support, and the equally sized images available on the internet; you're on your own.

Easy to find though. Small white 3-pin connector, with Rear Fan printed next to it. I'm betting to the Left, of the aluminum finned Heatsink, for the Northbridge chip. (Below processor socket)

Next to an Electrolytic Capacitor, that has a gold, and black plastic sleeve.
Used for a computer case fan in the Rear. Draws air OUT of the computer case. (Out the back)

J - PCI Express x16 Connector.
THIS, is where the graphics card goes.
A PCI Express graphics card.

OR, you can use a PCI graphics card, in one of the white PCI slots.
I would NOT. The PCI technology is NO where near, the PCI Express technology,

The front of your computer is the Front Panel.
L - Front Panel Audio Connector, is for the audio ports in the Front Panel.
FP_AUDIO

It is to the Left of the white PCI slots, and the header itself is Yellow in color.
Do not know the individual pinout of this Front Panel Audio header.

You have a plug connector that plugs onto it.
You can see the header is missing one pin. The missing pin is called the Key.
This shows you how to line up the plug connector to it.

If you need the individual pinout, trace the individual wires to the Front Panel audio ports.

N - HD Audio Link Connector
Plug connector goes on it also.
Location believed to be Bottom edge of motherboard, towards the Left.

O - Parallel ATA IDE Connector
Just the usual 40-pin IDE (PATA) connector.
(Actually, ONLY 39 pins )
Bottom edge of motherboard, black in color

ALL three harddrive options are SATA, so you won't be using it for your harddrive.
The optical drive you have is IDE (PATA), so this connector is where it plugs in.

Notice the cutout in the side of the connector. This is a Locating Notch.
Lines up with a Locating Lug, on the flat IDE ribbon cable, for the optical drive,



P - IEEE 1394 Connector
It's for the Firewire (1394a) ports in the Front Panel.
Plug connector goes to it.
Color is Blue, and it is in-between the white PCI slots

Q - USB 2.0 Connectors
Two of them side by side, but separated by a small Electrolytic Capacitor.
Black color for these USB headers.

They are for the Front Panel.
Location to the right of the black IEEE 1394 connector, bottom edge of motherboard.
They utilize the USB 2.0 technology.

ONLY one is marked. -> USB 2.
It has FP_USB_2, printed under it.
Front Panel USB 2.
The other one to the Left, is FP_USB_1.

EACH of those headers supports TWO USB ports.

A (Media) Card Reader has TWO cables, and uses ONE USB header.

One of those USB headers then, can be used for a Card Reader in the Front Panel.
The other USB header for Two USB ports in the Front Panel.

R - SATA Connectors
You see there are SIX.
Marking starts with SATA 0. (SATA0)

SATA 0 is for the SATA harddrive.
SATA 1 is for an optical drive (CD/DVD drive)

IF, you are using TWO optical drives, the MAIN optical drive connects to SATA1. The secondary optical drive connects to SATA2.

Make sure if you are adding a SATA optical drive, (That the computer did NOT come with), that you go into BIOS Setup; and ENABLE that SATA connector you wish to use.

HOWEVER,............the beauty of SATA is, that you can plug ANY device into ANY SATA connector; and BIOS will find the device.

Want to plug an optical drive into SATA0? No problem.
Want to plug the SATA harddrive into SATA 5?
No problem.

Just make SURE that SATA 5 is ENABLED, in BIOS Setup.

S - Front Panel Connector

Again, the front of your computer is the Front Panel.
Moving on.......
The area of contact pins on the motherboard, that the Main wires from the Front Panel connect to, is the Front Panel header.

Here you can see the individual pins, are marked by colors on the header itself.
Pin 2 is next to the Green pin, on the Bottom row to the Right.

Pin 1 is above it.
Looks confusing, because Pin 6 for the header above it, is marked right there also.

Pin 8 is marked on the bottom of the header.
Pin 9 is marked on the Top of the header, all the way to the left; except some 'crackhead' marked it upside down. (lol)

So,........pinout..........

Starting on the Top row, at the Right side; going towards the Left,
Pins 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9.

Starting on the Bottom row, at the Right side; going towards the Left.
Pins 2, 4, 6, and 8. There is NO Pin 10.

1) Pins 1 and 3 are for the HarDDrive activity LED.
(Light Emitting Diode, so I'm not going to refer to it as a light.
It is. LED states that)

Pin 1 is for the Positive ( + ) connection.
If the HDD LED is dim when the harddrive is active, switch the wires around.

2) Pins 5 and 7 are for a Reset switch, IF a Reset switch is used.

3) Pin 9 is 5 Volts.
5 Volt power. That is why it is marked as +5 Volts.
Used for the factory to test with.
It is N/C. Not Connected.

4) Pins 2 and 4 are for a Power On LED.
Pin 2 is for the Positive ( + ) wire.
If the PWR LED is dim when the computer is on, switch the wires around.

5) Pins 6 and 8 are for the Power On switch.

6) Again, there is NO Pin 10.

T - Auxillary Front Panel Power On LED Connector
Right above the Front Panel header.

Freaking beats me why it would even be on there.
To iterate;

There are only 2 pins. This type of Power On LED header has 3-pins usually.
It is used for a dual color Power On LED.

Used back in the day when computers had the 'Turbo Mode' feature, and 'Normal Mode' feature.
Dual colors of dual color Power On LED was usually Green, and Yellow.
Green for Turbo Mode, Yellow for Normal Mode.

Was in reality a bunch of cr@p.
Turbo Mode was the computer actually operating in NORMAL mode, while Normal Mode was the computer was operating slower.
Just another gimmick.

Probably why Gateway states it does Not support this feature.

U - Clear CMOS Jumper
If you do not know what this is for, LEAVE IT ALONE.
(He states politely)

V - Front Fan Connector
Yes, you guessed it. For the computer case fan in the Front, that draws air INTO the computer.
Location? Close to the round CMOS watch type battery.

X - Intrusion Switch Connector

Can't believe they are still using this cr@p.
It's so if someone opens the computer case, the power to the motherboard is turned off.

Good feature, but if the person working on the computer; doesn't know enough to unplug the computer from power FIRST, then chances are they do Not know about Anti-Static Procedures either.

Don't FOLLOW Anti-Static Procedures, you can use the motherboard for a Frisbee, or expensive paperweight.

Static shock the motherboard, is why.
Goodbye Processor (CPU), Ram Memory, motherboard, graphics card, (IF used)......and who knows what else.

DO NOT connect anything to it. Leave alone.

(If you do though, it has to be ENABLED in BIOS Setup; to use this feature)

cause of problem:
1.the driver is not fit if you use the window xp 64bit. put the dvd or cd to you dvd rom. Use the driver of the motherboard window vista 64bits or 32bits "go to my computer click the dvd rom or drive I or G.
open folder click audio 64bits or 32bits them copy and send to you desktop click the logo of HD audio and wait. if the problem is the same after you install HD audio because your dvd or cd have many scratch. go to the website of the brand of motherboard. Hello.

The Compaq Presario SR1703WM desktop computer, uses an Asus A9AE-LE motherboard.
HP/Compaq's name is AmberineM - GL6E

1) I would like to start with the Front Panel wires.
The Front panel, is the plastic front on your computer tower, where the Power On button, Power On LED, and so on is located.

The Front Panel header is the connector on the motherboard, where the cables, (Wires), from the Front Panel connect to.

Looking at the HP Support link above, I would like you to scroll down the page to the illustration of the motherboard, and the photo of the motherboard under the illustration.

Looking at the illustration observe the bottom Right corner.
F_PANEL1 indicates the Front Panel header.

Note there are 4 pins going across the Top, and 5 pins going across the Bottom.

Looking inside your computer, the motherboard will be located in a different position, compared to the illustration.

The Front Panel header will be located Vertically, (Up, and down)

Note that there is a twisted pair of Black, and Red wires.
These wires form the Power On cable.
They come directly from the Power on switch.

There is a twisted pair of Yellow, and Black wires.
These wires form the Harddrive Activity LED light cable.
(HDD)
When the harddrive is active, this LED flashes.

There is a twisted pair of Green, and Black wires.
These wires form the Power On LED light cable.

The wires, (Cables), should be in one Black connector.

Looking at the Front Panel header in your computer, align the Black plastic connector's socket holes, with the pins sticking up out of the Front Panel header, on the motherboard.

Note that the Front Panel header is rectangular in shape. There is 1 pin missing.
The Black connector coming from the Front Panel of the computer, has one socket hole blocked off, to match.

Align the four socket holes in the Black connector, to match the 4 pins sticking up out of the Front Panel header, on the motherboard.

The other 5 socket holes in the Black connector, will match up to the 5 pins sticking up, automatically.

Use care, and you may need a bright light to assist.
These pins can be bent quite easily.
(Also watch your fingers, as the ends of the pins are S-H-A-R-P!)

2) Where it states CLRTC (CLPWD under it), is the Clear CMOS jumper.
Suggest you leave it alone.

3) Where it states F_ USB1, and F_USB2, is where the USB cables from the front of the computer connect to.

(The USB ports on the front of the computer's Front Panel.
F_USB1, and F_USB2 headers on the motherboard, are shown on the illustration to the Left, of the Front Panel header. F_PANEL1)

The plastic connector on a USB cable coming from the Front Panel, has an orientation just like the Front Panel header cable does.

There is 1 pin missing on the USB header on the motherboard.
There is a blocked socket hole in the USB cable's connector.
Align the connector to match the pins.

Doesn't matter which USB cable from the Front Panel, that you connect to the USB headers on the motherboard.
BIOS will find them, and assign an IRQ to each, once you turn the computer on.

All you will see at a first glance is a series of thick Gray insulated cables, coming from the Front Panel of your computer.

If you follow the cables by eye, you can see where the USB cables are connected to the back of the USB ports, on the Front Panel.

You may, or may not, have to remove the Front Panel to see more clearly.

Computer case open, look inside towards the Front Panel.
There is a Green plastic tab towards the Top.

This locking tab is depressed Towards the Inside of the computer, to START to unlock the Front Panel.

Towards the bottom in the same plane, is a Black locking tab. This tab is pulled Towards the Outside of the computer.
There is another Black plastic tab on the opposite side.

At the Bottom are two more Black plastic locking tabs. These are depressed down, towards the Bottom of the computer case.
One on one side, one on the opposite side.

Start by depressing the plastic Green tab, and gently easing the Top of the Front Panel, slightly out.
Then go to the two Black plastic locking tabs located towards the Middle, and depress them.

Ease the top of the Front Panel out a little more.
Finally go to the two Black plastic locking tabs located at the Bottom, and depress them.
Ease the Front Panel off.

(NOTE*
Your computer's Front Panel may not have locking tabs located at the bottom.
Just locking tabs located up from the bottom, more towards the middle)

It's no picnic for your first time, but once you have done it, it becomes easy. (Ummm, Easier!)

4) The Firewire (a1394) cable on the Front Panel, connects to the F_1394 header on the motherboard.
In the motherboard illustration the F_1394 header is located to the Left, of PCI2

Power Supply Types

There are two basic types of power supplies. There are AT power supplies, which are older and in older computers, and ATX power supplies, which you will find in virtually every new computer you can buy.

There are two fundamental differences between AT and ATX power supplies. First, the switch mechanism is different. AT power supplies use a normal on-off switch, which directly turns the power supply on or off.

ATX power supplies use a momentary switch which does not directly control the power. Instead, the switch signals the motherboard, which performs one of three actions:

  • If the computer is off, the power supply is turned on (which turns the computer on)
  • If the computer is on, the computer goes into power-saving mode (standby)
  • If the switch is held for more than 4 seconds, the power is cut and the computer turns off.
Because of this difference, ATX power supplies are better for projects that require the second power supply to turn on automatically when the computer is turned on.

The second difference is in the motherboard connector: AT power supplies provide two 6-pin connectors (figure 1), which are easy to insert backwards. The ATX connector is a single 20-pin connector that only plugs in one way (figure 2).

Both power supplies provide two types connectors for plugging devices into. These connectors are called Molex connectors, and they come in two sizes (see figure 3 and 4). A power supply will generally have a few of each size.

There is no difference between the two sizes other than the size itself. Both sizes provide the same amount of power to whatever device is plugged into it (12V and 5V). The small Molex connectors are generally used only for floppy drives. Large Molex connectors power hard drives, CD/DVD drives, and many fans and lights as well.

Note: You can purchase large and small Y-adapters if you run out of Molex connectors. Be careful when using the Y-adapters however, because if your power supply does not have enough power for all the devices attached (especially true for older, lower-wattage supplies), you can damage it.

USB External Harddisk Detection Problem


some people say that its because of not enough power . try inserting the hard disk in other usb slots ( at the back ). onlu usb slots at the back of my pc detects my hard disk

Needing to plug new power source to motherboard, need the diagram format


the easyest way to do it is to open up the side panel of the computer rite down the info off the side of the power supply such as voltage and so on then go out and buy the same type then as you pull out a plug from the one in your computer put in the same plug from the one you bought and you should be rite, theres nothing that technical you need to no just disconnect it from the power and pull out the plugs its that easy

Tower top mounted USB portss


The cables from the front panel USB connectors have a key in them that will line up with the missing pin on the board's USB headers. Just line up the connectors and plug them onto the board. It doesn't matter if you use USB1 on the board for the plug marked USB1.

Windows problem


tol, im sure it is compatible because Me is millenium edtition and i think that is older that XP that we have now. I had a friend that has an older PC like Pentium 3 with 700Mhz(that old). I install windows xp to his computer and it works. the drivers and others. hope that helps you tol. ask me if you got any problems! salamat sa pag rate.
