My Ti83 had the same problem. It got sat on, and broke the filament in the middle of the screen. Your right, it isn't going to go away. Eventhough, after a while it did seem to lighten up a little before, I sold it cheap on ebay. I think the filament leaked back through the back side of the screen. It is not worth fixing, and your better off getting a low winning bid for a better one on ebay. You will more likely destroy it if you try to take it a part. I only know one person who was able to take theirs a part. Everybody else destroyed theirs. If you have to have one try ebay. They will tell you everything wrong, and your more likely to get a good one. People on ebay will disclose everything about their products instead taking the chance for getting bad feedback.

They almost give them away on ebay! If you do it right.

All I get when powered on is a black square that is gridlike. No other controls work. All 5 batteries are new. How do I get it fixed. My location is Reseda California 91335

Try to lighten the screen reolution. Turn the calculator on, press the 2nd key. Then hold the down arrow key. This should lighten the screen. You can darken the screen also. The only difference is hold the up arrow key down until it's dark enough.

How to calculate a square root number after pressing the 2nd button? For example, one of the problems i was asked was, 105625 all in square root by pressing 2nd, x^2 105625) and enter. But I cannot find...

Are we discussing squares or square roots?

The square root is the 2nd function of the multiply key.

There is no square function on the keyboard. Instead, simply raise the number to the second power using the ^ key just above the divide.

Turn the calculator on. Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the down-arrow key for a few seconds until the screen lightens.
