Hayward phantom stuck in top mode = doesn't appear

Hayward phantom stuck in top mode - doesn't appear to be switch. Gear box working fine other than that - clenas top fine, spins out fine, but never switches to bottom mode. When we manualy put switch on bottom mode, it still shotts jets for surface cleaning - not bottom jets

Try running the cleaner with the top cover off and the pressure on while you hold it with your hand. If you move the switch back and forth you should see pressure changes in the hoses that attach to the manifold. Check to make sure the hoses are attached and there is no leaking pressure. Even a small leak will have a big effect. Next on to the manifold - it has two pistons, one controls the "turnaround" function and the other controls the dive and surface. The pistons get bound up and don't slide easily in their cylinders. Really it's a serious design flaw - how are the pistons suposed to stay lubricated long term with chlorinated water running through at high pressure?

The manifold can be taken apart and the pistons lubricated with standard pool lube. Take the piston caps off of the ends (very carefully) and lubricate the rubber seals. The piston rods may come loose as they do not secure tightly to the small plastic doors that slide to control water flow in he manifold. In that case, take the manifold apart carefully and be sure to keep the various screws organized - reattach the piston rods. I have done this entire process without disconnecting any rubber hoses. You will definately feel like you are in he weeds when you have this thing completely apart. This is normal!
I have had to do this about once a year to keep my phantoms running. Finally, you may want to take a picture of the innards beforehand to help you remember how the hoses and components fit in the unit. It's confusing. Good luck!

SOURCE: Hayward phantom will not float fully to the surface

If it has skimmed the top of the pool before try rearranging sections of the hose and make sure all sections of hose can rotate freely.

SOURCE: Hayward Phantom pool cleaner-up/both/down switch replacement

There are 5 screws on the bottom, remove them and hold the cleaner together while turning it right side up. Lift off the top cover (watch the styrofoam inserts that go behind the back wheels), sometimes they fall out when the cover is removed but they're easy to put back in place. This will give you access to both the switch and the round gear box. Lift both out then put the switch on and lower the gear box back into place.

I have a Phantom. It goes into the skim mode (the top jets shoot), but won't rise to the top. Anyone????

I had the same problem. The fix is easy. The stiraphom floats inside get waterlogged and need to be replace after several years of being left in the water. The pair cost about $15 and easily slide in and out once the top cover of the phantom is removed.

My phantom remains on the water's surface and will not dive to the bottom of the pool. What do i need to do to have the phantom clean the bottom of the pool?

There is a switch on these pool cleaners that has options "top, bottom, and automatic". If you have the cleaner set to automatic and it is staying on the surface, try changing the switch from the automatic setting and put it on "bottom" until you get the bottom clean.

The phantom just goes around in circles & gets tangled until it stops.

It sounds like the gear box has failed inside the unit. Causing it to not go straight anymore. Replace the gear box assembly.

Phantom does not move gets stuck in one spot

Is the cleaner getting stuck at steps, corners, etc? If so, your spin out is too short. Change the cam to the "winter" position to increase the pool cleaners spin out.

You have either a bad or stuck gear box or a loose or damaged a frame bearing. The gear box controls turning and the a frame controls propulsion, but one bad bearing will cause the cleaner to move more in one direction, causing the hose to coil. You can hold the cleaner under the water by the top of the hose, and it should turn in all directions within a few minutes. If it doesn't, then it is the gearbox. If it does, then likely a problem with the a frames.

My Hayward Phantom cleaner spins continuously.

Mine had this problem too 6 months ago and I successfully fixed it . I will try to describe the remedy as best I can. I will use the same part names that Hayward does on their diagrams (easily found on google). The unit has 2 pistons that are attached laterally to the manifold. They move in and out slowly to direct the flow of water for the "turn around" function. They seem to be the root of many problems that long term phantom owners are all too familiar with.

Essentially, the pistons get bound-up or stuck over time or the cylinder caps on the ends leak water. First remove the cam cover on the top of the unit (while the pump is running) and determine if your turn around cam is working. If it's not turning, then the gearbox may be broken.

To lubricate the pistons, you will need to remove several components so that you can remove the manifold assembly. If I recall, you can do it without disconnecting any rubber hoses. Once you get to the manifold, tilt it up so you can get to the cylinder caps on the left and right side. Very carefully remove one of the caps by gently prying the plastic tabs. Inside, there is a plastic piston with a rubber seal. Mine were stuck and difficult to move. The pistons should slide easily. I lubricated the indide of the cylinders with pool and spa lube from Lesl***. I pressed the cylinders back and forth until they began to slide freely. I reassembled everything and it worked like a charm! No more "death spiral". On one of my phantoms, a cylinder cap tab broke off and was leaking. I used a large zip tie diagonally to hold the cap on. It held permanently.

The Phantom is not a trouble free unit by any stretch, but I do think pool stores have taken advantage of the situation by often unnecessarily replacing major components. I'm basing this on some of the posts have read in pool foums. It reminds me of German car dealerships!
